My understanding is that Xabi Alonso has already begun working closely with Estêvão Willian behind the scenes after reviewing his recent performances. While Alonso rates the Brazilian wonderkid’s talent extremely highly, he believes there are four key areas Estêvão must improve if he wants to reach the highest level under his system.

1. Defensive work rate: Alonso wants Estêvão to contribute far more without the ball. After reviewing his recent matches, he believes the youngster needs to improve his tracking back, recovery runs, support for the full-backs, and overall defensive intensity.

2. Passing consistency: Passing is one of the foundations of Alonso’s style. He was not fully satisfied with Estêvão’s passing accuracy after noticing too many misplaced passes during the 2025/26 season. Training sessions have already included extra focus on passing drills, movement to receive the ball, and improving decision-making in possession.

3. Aerial ability: Alonso also wants Estêvão to become more effective in the air. The focus is on improving his timing, heading technique, and ability to score from crosses.

4. Final-third decision-making: Another area being addressed is Estêvão’s tendency to over-dribble in dangerous areas. Alonso wants him to recognise the right moments to shoot early or release a teammate instead of taking unnecessary extra touches.
