Today these people would be called settlers-- hilltop youth who "violently capture" territory. In reality, this picture, from 1909 of Jews standing on the sand dunes of what would become Tel-Aviv, is not so different from Jews who set up residence on barren lands of Judea Samaria. However, there is a difference. The Jews of Judea Samaria are setting up residence in the ancient heartland of the Jewish people. It is remarkable how within the space of Jewish and Israel education, the Jews of Tel Aviv are normalized while the same people in Judea Samaria are demonized and delegitimized. I try to never remain silent so I pose questions, questions about language. "Why don't you refer to these Jews in 1909 as settlers? Why do you only reserve this term for Jews of Judea Samaria?" I also like to ask why "settler" is only used for the Israeli Jews, but never for Palestinian Arabs who have built or set up residence all throughout Judea Samaria (see https://t.co/997acPANtl). The answer I usually get is that it all has to do with power. The Jews setting up residence in J&S have the power of the Jewish state behind them, while the Palestinian Arabs have no such power. Remarkable for they do have the power of the world and the billions that flow to the Palestinian Authority. But what power did the Jews in 1909 have? At what point will power stop being the only lens through which to interpret world events?

Last summer, a wave of Western countries recognized a Palestinian state. They insisted this wasn't a blank check.

Recognition, they told us, came with expectations:
➡️ Reform Palestinian governance
➡️ Hold democratic elections

A year later, how many of those conditions have been met? NONE

Yet nobody talks about the absolute failures of Palestinian leadership: corruption, the refusal to hold elections or pursue meaningful political reform, funding education that incites violence, or preparing Palestinian society for peaceful coexistence.

Here's the pattern: Israel is treated as an accountable political actor, expected to meet conditions and answer for its decisions.

Palestinians are treated as people to whom history simply happens. The result is a conflict prolonged not only by Palestinian leaders, but by an international community unwilling to hold them to account.

Among the categories of discourse through which defamatory claims about Israelis and Jews circulate, “settler violence” is perhaps the most porous. Notably, such narratives are amplified in significant part by Jews and Israelis themselves, individuals animated by a profound moral disappointment in their own people. This reflex of internalized guilt appears to be a distinctively Jewish phenomenon. One does not observe Americans engaging in collective displays of shame following civil unrest in Chicago, Los Angeles, or New York, nor do the French express comparable anguish over the conduct of their compatriots.

The anticipated rejoinder is familiar: the cases are not analogous. In Israel, the argument runs, violence constitutes the exercise of majority power over a minority or oppressed population, whereas American violence, say gun violence, occurs on a putatively level playing field. Here we arrive at the crux of the matter: a fundamental discomfort with power itself. On this logic, those who possess power and exercise it , whether justly or unjustly, are rendered guilty by default, by virtue of that power alone. Transposed onto a schoolyard, the reasoning would hold that the largest and strongest child is obligated to exercise restraint even when struck by a smaller one.

Herein lies the hallmark of effective propaganda: what is deliberately omitted. In the antizionist imagination, the settler figures as a predatory, demonic Jew who hunts Palestinians for sport. Absent from this portrait is any context: the car-rammings, stabbings, stone-throwing, and other attacks initiated by Palestinian Arabs that precede and precipitate such confrontations.

And so the “settler” becomes a symbol to be decoded and decoded only in one way: an ogre that stands in the way of peace.

Most recently Lulu Garcia Navarro of the @nytimes sat down with @JGreenblattADL to discuss antizionism. At one moment Navarro remarks that she is not against Israel’s existence, just Israel’s dominance. But what she is not telling you is that dominance is the logical extension of existence. I exist and take up physical space. My existence means that my body dominates at a given intersection of time and space, such that no one else can inhabit the same point. Israel is a Jewish state, which means it joins over 100 ethnic majority states that assert their dominance, ie existence. But herein is the sleight of hand. Dominance presupposes power over someone else . No one ever says I have no problem with Pakistan’s existence just its dominance. In fact, here “dominance” functions as a gateway into the apartheid and ethnostate libels.

The diplomatic isolation of Israel during the war in Gaza following the Oct. 7 Hamas massacre will go down in history as a moral failure and a defeat of humanity, French philosopher Bernard-Henri Lévy said on Thursday.

“The absence of support for Israel will be considered by future historians as a moment of huge disgrace for the West,” Lévy told JNS in an interview in Tel Aviv. “It is a defeat of humanity and a moral defeat. It is the loss of any moral compass.”

Lévy, who lives in Paris, rushed to Israel the day after the Oct. 7 attacks and the following year penned Israel Alone, a book about the lack of diplomatic support for the Jewish state in the West.

“I was beyond shocked,” he said.

He was back in Israel on Thursday to deliver the keynote address at the annual conference on contemporary antisemitism hosted by the Comper Center for the Study of Antisemitism and Racism at the University of Haifa. The gathering is the largest annual academic conference on modern-day antisemitism, drawing an estimated 550 participants, including 250 in-person presenters, with others joining virtually from abroad.

The 77-year-old French intellectual, commonly known as BHL, decried the surge in antisemitism, which he called “unprecedented in my lifetime,” noting that he rarely gives lectures in France for security reasons and that the only safe place for him to speak in the United Kingdom is a synagogue.

“Even if I come to speak about philosophy or non-Jewish issues, the only safe place for me in the U.K. is a synagogue,” he said.
