Hadrian’s Wall, a remarkable ancient Roman fortification, is situated in what is now Northern England and Southern Scotland. Commissioned by Emperor Hadrian in 122 AD, this wall was constructed to serve as a defensive boundary marking the northernmost extent of the Roman Empire in Britain. The wall was a magnificent achievement for its time and stretched approximately 117km from the east coast of England to the west coast.
Its primarily purpose was to maintain control over the northern frontier of Roman Britain and regulate the movement of people and goods between the Roman-controlled territory and the lands to the north. It consisted of a stone wall, fortified with watchtowers and forts at regular intervals, and a defensive ditch on the northern side. The wall also featured a military road running alongside it which facilitated the movement of Roman troops. Moreover, it allowed Roman soldiers to monitor and control access to the south while discouraging raids and invasions.
