A remarkably preserved Old Babylonian stone weight carved into the shape of a grasshopper (or locust) - dated (1800-1700 BC), ancient Babylon (located in modern-day Iraq).

Sculpted from hematite (haematite). This dense, iron-oxide mineral was favored by Mesopotamian merchants because its extreme hardness made the weight durable and highly resistant to fraudulent tampering.

Rather than being a decorative sculpture or a paperweight (as paper did not exist at the time), this item served as a standard commercial trade weight. In Mesopotamia, official weights were commonly produced in standardized animal shapes to guarantee fair economic transactions.

Despite its immense age, the artifact features a sleek, streamlined aesthetic that appears strikingly modern to modern viewers. It showcases finely detailed wings and bent legs, demonstrating the superior lapidary expertise of ancient craftsmen.
