For 14-year-old Hudson Omondi, the internet is more than a place to browse, it’s a gateway to knowledge, new ideas and the future he imagines for himself. But before his school was connected, accessing online learning meant relying on his parents’ phones or finding money for a cybercafé.​

Through the Giga project, Hudson and his classmates can now access digital learning resources right from their school, while teachers use tablets and projectors to bring lessons to life. Connecting schools to the internet is helping give learners the tools, opportunities and choices to shape their future.​

Kenya’s climate future must be shaped by those who will live with its consequences the longest, our children and young people. My Ministry is committed to ensuring that they are not just beneficiaries of climate action, but active voices, leaders and agents of change.

I held a meeting with officials from UNICEF Kenya, led by UNICEF Global WASH Director Mr. Evariste Komlan, to discuss the Ministry’s endorsement of the Declaration on Children, Youth and Climate Action, launched at COP25 in 2019.

The Declaration calls for climate policies, financing and actions that respond to the needs of children and youth, while recognizing their important role in building a resilient and sustainable future.

Our discussions focused on strengthening collaboration between my Ministry and UNICEF to advance every child’s right to a healthy environment, while addressing the growing risks that climate change poses to children and young people, particularly those in vulnerable and marginalized communities.

We also emphasized the need to increase investment in child and youth-responsive climate adaptation, disaster risk reduction and resilience programmes. By equipping our young people with knowledge, skills and opportunities, we empower them to protect themselves, their communities and our environment.

My Ministry will continue to create meaningful platforms for children and youth to participate in climate decision-making at the national level.

I commend UNICEF for its continued partnership with Kenya and look forward to deeper collaboration in climate financing, innovation and environmental action.

It was a privilege to host @FCDOMattBaugh, British High Commissioner to Kenya, and Deputy High Commissioner, Diana Dalton, for constructive exchange on evolving development landscape.
