A dog got loose on my street in North Carolina.
A woman burst out of her house, screen door slamming, and yelled: "BISCUIT! BISCUIT, NO!"
A golden retriever was running down the center of the road at a speed I did not know this breed possessed.
Within thirty seconds, four people were outside. One man was barefoot. One was holding a spatula. A woman across the street swung her car door open as a barricade and yelled, "CUT HIM OFF AT THE MAILBOX!"
I put my groceries down. I removed my jacket. Nobody asked me to join. Nobody needed to.
The spatula man held position at a driveway. A teenager on a bicycle became a forward scout, yelling "HE'S BY THE FIRE HYDRANT" at full volume. The barefoot man was closing from the south. I crouched between two hedges to block the retreat.
Six strangers. No plan. A perfect pincer movement that not one of them knew they were executing.
The dog reversed course. He came straight at me. Full speed. Tongue out. Tail going. This animal was not fleeing. He was having the single greatest day of his life.
Both paws hit my chest. I went down. My bag of rice split open across the sidewalk.
The barefoot man grabbed the collar. "Got him."
The owner ran over, crying and laughing at the same time. She looked at me on the ground, covered in rice, and said, "Oh my God I'm so sorry. He does this."
He does this. A repeat offender. And the neighborhood still deploys.
She tried to pay for the rice. I refused. She said, "At least let me bring you banana bread."
It arrived the next morning, still warm. A note on top: "From Biscuit's mom. He says sorry."
He does not say sorry. He will do this again. Everyone on this street knows it. They will come outside again. Barefoot. Holding spatulas. Blocking mailboxes. Nobody will be asked.
Total deployment: four minutes. Total planning: zero. Total hesitation: none.
America does not have a system for a loose dog. It has something better. It has neighbors who are already outside before you finish yelling the name.

A landmark official government review says trans youth care WORKS: better mental health, near-zero regret, affirms puberty blockers, and delays are “morally urgent.”

@WolfydocS I'm so sorry. In contrast, when someone at my work had a seizure & was then diagnosed with epilepsy, their whole dept got mandatory first aid training on what to do when someone has a seizure. (The training was optional for staff in other depts.)
The ADHD urge to be an excellent problem solver for other people, while letting our car registration expire for 8 months while actively thinking about it every single day
Starmer inflicted brutal attacks on trans rights and curtailed our access to healthcare. But his resignation means little. His party have declared war on trans people. This will continue under Burnham.
Politicians will not save us. We will save ourselves.

Therapy helps but let’s be clear. You can’t CBT your way out of capitalism. You can’t mindfulness your way out of racism. You can’t self care your way out of oppression. You can’t journal your way out of ableism. This isn’t about coping, it’s about deconstructing the systems.
It’s why I say that 2019 me is dead. I have the same hobbies and the same family, but I’m not that person anymore. That person was optimistic and believed in the inherent goodness of humanity, from which a small percentage of people deviated.
The pandemic taught me the opposite is true, that people are only as good as the amount of inconvenience they can withstand.
It doesn’t change how I interact with others, but has seismically shifted how invested I become. It is what it is.
This is how you push through universally unpopular legislation. You start with attacks on groups most people don't care about (sex workers), under the guise of something many support (protecting kids). Then you keep increasing the heat until the frog sits in boiling water.
FACT:
The Chair of the EHRC has confirmed there is NO law stopping anyone from using the public toilet of their own choice.
She also confirmed no one can be asked to produce any documents to prove sex to enter these spaces.
