1996, Joe Allen became first Black Schenectady City Council Member. 2012, Marion Porterfield became the first Black woman.

For 25 years, there would only be 1 Black person on the city council until the historic elections of 2021. Starting January 1, 2022, the city was represented by 3 Black Schenectady City Council Members with Marion Porterfield becoming the City Council President, another first.
