Israel's Ambassador to Kenya, H.E. Gideon Behar, paid a courtesy call on University of Nairobi Vice Chancellor Prof. Eng. Ayub Gitau on June 10.
The discussions reviewed ongoing cooperation in agriculture, cybersecurity, innovation and student mobility, including the AICAT programme through which UoN students trained in Israel between 2021 and 2025.
The meeting also explored Kenya and Israel University-to-University partnership opportunities in climate-smart agriculture, AI, digital health, water management and academic exchange.

Today, the University of Nairobi signed agreements with Shimizu Corporation under the KenyaβJapan Labour Mobility Agenda to develop the next generation of construction managers.
The 3-year programme will provide:
- Free Japanese language training
- Practical construction management experience in Japan
- International exposure and career pathways for Kenyan talent
The signing ceremony, held at the State Department for Diaspora Affairs, was witnessed by Dr. Beatrice Inyangala, Principal Secretary for Higher Education; Mr. Horib Tomonobu of the Embassy of Japan; Amb. Isaiya Kabira, Amb. Moi Lemoshira; and senior representatives of Shimizu Corporation, including Mr. Kenzo Matsumoto and Mr. Hitoshi Fujita.
We commend the Technical University of Kenya @TU_Kenya, which also signed an agreement with Shimizu Corporation under this initiative today. CLE Quality Assurance, Compliance and Licensing (QCL) Committee conducted an on-site inspection at the @UoNLawFaculty .
The inspection team was led by Mr. George Nyakundi, Chairperson of the QCL Committee, alongside Ms. Aisha Abdallah, Member, Mr. Oscar Eredi, OGW, Member, @CLE_CEO Prof. Jack Mwimali, and officers from the Directorate of Standards, Licensing, Supervision and Compliance.
This inspection follows earlier audits conducted at the Facultyβs Parklands Campus in March and Kisumu Campus in April as part of CLEβs ongoing quality assurance framework aimed at strengthening legal education and training in Kenya.
During the engagement, Mr. George Nyakundi emphasized the importance of a collaborative approach between regulators and institutions in advancing quality legal education. He also highlighted the growing demand for ethical legal professionals and robust legal research to meet the evolving needs of society and the legal profession.
The @uonbi delegation was led by Prof. John D. Mande, Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic Affairs), Prof. Winifred Kamau, Dean of the Faculty of Law, Dr. Bett Jackson Kiprotich, and other members of the university leadership and faculty.
Prof. Mande reaffirmed the UoNβs commitment to maintaining a high-quality, relevant, and forward-looking legal education programme that equips graduates with the knowledge, skills, ethics, and professional competencies required in contemporary legal practice.
The inspection reviewed key areas including curriculum development, student support services, staffing, research and publications, governance, library resources, infrastructure, and experiential learning opportunities.
Discussions also explored innovations in legal education, technology integration, and competency-based approaches to training future legal professionals.

The University of Nairobi Faculty of Law today hosted members of the Council of Legal Education (CLE) for an on-site inspection of its Bachelor of Laws (LL.B) programme.
The inspection forms part of the Council's quality assurance framework and examines whether law programmes continue to meet the standards required for legal education and training in Kenya.
During the exercise, the Faculty presented developments in curriculum review, student support services, staffing, research and publications, governance, library resources, infrastructure and experiential learning. Discussions also focused on the Faculty's efforts to strengthen practical legal training through moot court programmes, judicial attachments, externships and legal aid initiatives.
The Faculty shared findings from its recent graduate tracer study, ongoing curriculum review process, research projects, international collaborations and plans to incorporate emerging areas such as technology and competency-based approaches into legal education.
The DVC,AA Prof. Mande noted that legal education is evolving rapidly and that law schools must continue adapting their programmes to prepare graduates for contemporary legal practice while maintaining strong foundations in legal scholarship, ethics and professional responsibility.
Mr. George Nyakundi- Quality Assurance & Compliance Committee -CLE observed that compliance with legal education regulations, adequate teaching and learning infrastructure, and a strong research culture remain important ingredients in maintaining quality legal education.
Established in 1970, the University of Nairobi Faculty of Law is the oldest and largest law school in Kenya. Over the years, it has trained generations of legal professionals who continue to serve in the Judiciary, Parliament, public service, private practice, regional institutions and international organizations.
The inspection provided an opportunity to review progress, discuss emerging challenges and explore ways of strengthening legal education to meet the needs of students, the profession and society.

On Friday, June 5, 2026, the University of Nairobi underwent a formal Monitoring & Evaluation exercise by the State Department for Higher Education and Research, assessing its readiness for Kenya's Competency-Based Education and Training (CBET) reform.

Since 2024, the University has been building toward this. Curriculum reviews are at an advanced stage. CBET sits as a standing item in Senate and CouncilΒ to guarantee continuous academic oversight.Β Dedicated technical committees are steering implementation across all 10 faculties. Training of Trainers programmes are retooling academic staff institution-wide.

The University of Nairobi was pleased to host Germany's Ambassador to Kenya, H.E. Sebastian Groth, for discussions on strengthening academic cooperation and expanding opportunities for students, researchers and educators.
The Ambassador was accompanied by Ms. Kerstin Kriffmann of the German Embassy, Dr. Dorothea Weyler, Director of the DAAD Regional Office Nairobi, and Dr. Eliza Panagiotatou, DAAD Lecturer at the University of Nairobi.
The engagement focused on plans to remodel the Master of Arts in German programme, reinforcing the University's position as Kenya's only institution offering Master's-level training in German Studies. Discussions also explored opportunities for collaboration in research, innovation, capacity building and emerging technologies, including artificial intelligence.
The meeting further highlighted the enduring partnership between the University of Nairobi and Germany through DAAD, Erasmus and Erasmus+ programmes, research collaborations and academic exchanges.
