Dozens of people are homeless, and at least three people have been hospitalised, after a massive explosion ripped through an informal settlement in Slovo Park, Springs. The cause of the explosion is unknown, but the area is a hot spot for illegal mining.
From an informal settlement to a thriving community: Rodrigo Bueno’s transformation in #BuenosAires brings 611 new 🌿 energy-efficient homes, better 🌊flood protection & 💰economic opportunities for thousands.

🌎 Without proper data, the impacts of climate-induced disasters in informal settlements often go unrecognized. 🌎
Why is data key for addressing #LossAndDamage in these areas?

I'm writing to personally invite you to today's edition of the Rooted Cities Webinar, themed:
Between Favelas and Slums: Tracing Hope from Bahia and São Paulo to the Heart of Lagos.
This conversation is particularly close to my heart. I spent two months in Brazil last year (2024), engaging with communities, urban planners, and activists in both Bahia and São Paulo. During that period, I gained deep insights into the housing interventions being implemented in those cities—initiatives that are not only contextually grounded but also rich in lessons for other Global South cities, especially Lagos.
The models I encountered in Brazil expanded my thinking around community-driven solutions, urban memory, and inclusive policy. I believe that bringing these experiences into dialogue with our own realities in Lagos can shape more grounded advocacy and inspire more effective policy frameworks.
