Traditional Log Hives. Beekeepers still use one of the oldest and purest forms of beekeeping: hollowed-out log hives.
No plastic, no wires, no chemicals. Just wood, bees, and time.
These natural log hives mimic the bees' habitat in the wild, keeping colonies strong, honey pure, and the flavor deeply rooted in the forest around them. Every drop harvested tells the story of balance between humans and natureโhow it once was, and how it still can be.
Respect to the keepers who keep traditions alive. ๐๐น
You've got a friend in me! Lavender and zinnia make a great pair in the garden.
Companion plants like zinnia share lavender's preference for full sun, while adding contrast in color and shape.

If you've got moss taking over a patch of your lawn, stop buying stuff to kill it. Moss isn't the problem.
Moss doesn't kill grass and it doesn't choke anything out. It just moves into spots where the grass was already losing: deep shade, packed soil, poor drainage, or chronically damp conditions.
Those are all things grass struggles with and moss tolerates just fine. So the moss isn't attacking your lawn, it's telling you the grass was never thriving there in the first place.
Which is why moss-killer is usually a losing battle. You can rake the moss out or spray iron on it, but unless you fix the shade, drainage, or compaction underneath, it usually comes right back.
Stop fighting the one thing that actually wants to grow there. That little patch of moss holds water, protects the soil, shelters tiny creatures, and never asks you to mow it. Let it have the corner.

How many of you grow peppers? It seems like our container peppers often wait to be ripe when it's getting a bit too chilly to leave the plants outdoors anymore.

What's growing in your neighborhood? In one local community garden, we've seen loads of mint (no surprise), some rhubarb, and some other greens and herbs that were covered. Most plots still haven't been cleared of weeds. Have you planted anything yet?
A single sunflower hosts 69 species of moth and butterfly caterpillars. Begonias and pansies host none.
Helianthus is what ecologists call a keystone genus, which means it supports a disproportionate share of the food web.
Plant one sunflower and you've installed an apartment building for native bees, beetles, hoverflies, and the specialist sunflower bees that exist nowhere else in your ecosystem.
Plant 10 of them along a fence line and you've built infrastructure that supports an entire backyard food web for the cost of a seed packet.
A few rules: leave the stalks standing through winter so native bees can nest in the hollow stems.
Cut them to 12 to 18 inches in late spring after the next generation emerges.
And buy native varieties when you can. Pollenless ornamental sunflowers were bred for cut-flower bouquets and feed almost nothing.
The flower bed you've been planting with begonias has been an ecological dead zone. Ten sunflowers fixes it for three dollars.
COMPANION PLANTS FOR SQUASH: UNDERSTORY CROPPING FOR PRODUCTIVITY AND PEST REGULATION ๐ฟ
Squash (Cucurbita spp.) is a sprawling crop that creates a dense canopy, which can be effectively utilized in intercropping systems. When properly designed, the shaded microenvironment beneath squash plants can support a range of compatible species that contribute to pest management, soil health, and overall system productivity.
Borage (Borago officinalis), dill (Anethum graveolens), sweet alyssum (Lobularia maritima), calendula (Calendula officinalis), and nasturtium (Tropaeolum majus) are widely recognized for their role in attracting pollinators and beneficial insects. These species enhance ecological balance by supporting natural predators of common squash pests.
Leafy vegetables such as lettuce (Lactuca sativa) can tolerate partial shade and benefit from the reduced light intensity under squash canopies, which helps delay bolting and maintain leaf quality. This makes them suitable for understory cultivation.
Radish (Raphanus sativus) is a fast-growing root crop that can be integrated into squash systems due to its short growth cycle and ability to improve soil structure through root penetration. It also allows efficient use of inter-row space during early growth stages.
Aromatic herbs such as thyme (Thymus vulgaris), oregano (Origanum vulgare), and garlic (Allium sativum) contribute to pest suppression through the release of volatile compounds that may deter insect herbivores and reduce pest pressure in the cropping system.
Bush beans (Phaseolus vulgaris) play an important agronomic role through biological nitrogen fixation. Their symbiotic relationship with Rhizobium bacteria enriches soil nitrogen levels, which can benefit neighboring squash plants.
In summary, integrating compatible companion plants beneath squash enhances spatial efficiency, supports beneficial insect populations, improves soil fertility, and contributes to a more resilient and productive cropping system when properly managed.
