HEBRON IS UNDER SIEGE. FAMILIES ARE LOSING THEIR HOMES.

Since yesterday, at least 250 families have been displaced in Hebron, including my own sister, Hayat, and her seven children. Homes and shops are being demolished by the Israeli military.

Around 250,000 people are trapped in the city, while 1,000 families in H2 remain in their homes.

We are being collectively punished for something we neither did nor supported. Our suffering is being turned into political material for Israel’s elections, while innocent families pay the price.

I'm currently visiting Manila with my family, including the splendid San Agustin church in the old "Intramuros" town, and I was very surprised to see the entrance was adorned not only by sculptures of St Augustine and St Paul but also by Chinese guardian lions!

I dug a bit into why and found this seems to be a recurring feature in Spanish-era churches in the Philippines: you find Chinese guardian lions at the cathedrals of Vigan and Cebu, at the Santo Niño basilica (also in Cebu), at the Archdiocesan Shrine of Our Lady of Caysasay in Taal, and at the Morong church in Rizal province.

Apparently the history is that all those churches and cathedrals were built with the help of Chinese craftsmen, who did much of the skilled work and left the guardian lions as protection, just as they would have for any temple in China (https://t.co/ZizXI8vdAh).

The lions themselves were often carved from "piedra china" (https://t.co/ogDSXFc8lt), Chinese granite that arrived as ballast on the Chinese ships trading with Manila - the same stone that still paves some of the streets of the old "Intramuros" town.
