🚨Rio Ferdinand on why Manchester United are trusting Luke Shaw at left-back this season:

🗣️ Rio Ferdinand: “Shaw had a very good season last year. Probably his best season since arriving at Old Trafford, and now he’s working under a new manager in Michael Carrick.

“United did try to strengthen that position. They looked at Lewis Hall, but Newcastle weren’t willing to sell. They also looked at Alejandro Balde, but Barcelona couldn’t make a deal happen. So eventually, United had to trust the left-back who had already shown them he could perform Luke Shaw.

“And that’s a big decision when you consider his injury history. You’re basically saying, ‘We believe in you. We’re going to give you another chance to prove you can stay fit and give us a full season.’

“But then you’ve also got Patrick Dorgu. His natural position is left-back, so I think this is partly a compromise. United can use Shaw and Dorgu between them and get through the season while continuing to assess what they need in that position.

“I also think there’s a very direct message being sent to both of them: put the work in, perform consistently and show your worth.

“Because if they don’t, Manchester United will have no problem going back into the market next summer. For Shaw, it’s about proving the injuries are behind him. For Dorgu, it’s about showing that he can become the long-term answer.

“So there’s trust there, absolutely. But it’s not blind trust. United are giving both players an opportunity, and now it’s up to them to take it.”

🎙️ Reporter: “Joshua, what happened when Everton made the approach?”

🗣️ Joshua Zirkzee: “I was in the lobby on my phone with Youri, just having a normal conversation, when my agent called me and said Everton had submitted a bid to Manchester United.

“He asked me if I was happy to go. At first I said, ‘Yeah, sure, go ahead.’ Then I ended the call and Youri asked me what it was about.

“I told him Everton had made an offer for me and I had accepted. He looked at me and said, ‘You accepted?’

“I said, ‘I’m still thinking about it.’

“Then Youri became very direct. He said, ‘What is there to think about? I left Aston Villa after we won the Europa League and played the Super Cup final to come here. That should tell you there are bigger things to achieve at Manchester United. So what is the big thing you want to achieve by moving to Everton?’

“That question stayed in my head. I didn’t have an answer.

“I picked up my phone, called my agent and told him to stop the move. Then I went straight to Carrick and told him, ‘I want to stay. I’m going to fight for my place and give everything I have.’

“Youri didn’t tell me what to do. He just made me think about what I actually wanted. And in that moment, I realised I wasn’t ready to leave Manchester United.”
