Airlines crack down on power banks over growing safety risks

Travellers who often turn to portable power banks to keep their phones and other devices powered are facing stiffer restrictions, as airlines and regulatory bodies crack down on battery chargers over increasing safety risks.

In March, the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) issued new restrictions regarding lithium battery-powered power banks, limiting passengers to carrying only two at once and prohibiting travellers from recharging them during flights.

Suspected robbers attack Adamawa poly female hostel, steal 15 phones

Some students were injured on Wednesday after suspected armed robbers attacked the female hostel of the Numan campus of Adamawa State Polytechnic, Yola. 

Reports indicate that the attackers invaded the hostel in the morning with guns and cutlasses, carting away 15 phones and other belongings of the students.

I can't count how many people that I know that have lost their lives in the hands of car snatchers.

It has been 12 days since the death of Abu Bilal al-Minuki, and 12 days since the Islamic State (IS) last posted about ISWAP activities. That final post was made on Friday, 15 May at 8:19pm, just four hours before the operation that killed him. The deafening silence from IS is not coincidental and suggests that ISWAP's media operations have been severely impacted.

A former senior ISWAP media operator, who once served as second-in-command in the media department in Lake Chad, explained how the group's media functions:

"In the media department, there are distinct roles: those who handle computers, those who operate cameras, those focused solely on writing, and those who handle radio production. Computer operators are primarily responsible for editing footage captured by camera teams on the battlefield. After fighters return from an operation, they hand over the cameras to someone who downloads the content and clears the memory cards. This person then passes the raw materials to the editing team. Once editing is complete, a separate individual previews the content. After final approval, the materials are sent to Amaq."

While ISWAP maintains media departments in Sambisa, Farouk, and Krenowa, the Buhaira (Lake Chad) Wilayat's media team serves as a coordination hub for all ISWAP media activities and manages the communication channel between ISWAP and Amaq, the IS news agency. The other media teams may not have the means to send materials directly to Amaq.

Another noticeable silence comes from Radio Ra'id, ISWAP's radio service that provides a weekly news bulletin of IS activities around the world. The programme is produced and distributed by ISWAP without recourse to IS, and is broadcast in Kanuri, English, and Hausa. I understand it also broadcasts in Fulbe and French, though I have not personally listened to those broadcasts.

I was informed that the silence from Radio Ra'id predates al-Minuki's death and may be due to issues related to the supply of internet data for the Thuraya service used in the broadcast.

As the world celebrates Eid al-Adha, it will be interesting to see whether IS does not showcase celebrations from ISWAP.

SAD NEWS: Two staff of Usmanu Danfodiyo University Teaching Hospital (UDUTH) have reportedly been abducted by suspected bandits along the troubled Maru axis in Zamfara State while travelling from Abuja to Sokoto after attending a union meeting.

The victims, identified as Abdullahi of the Histopathology Department and Rufa'i of the Microbiology Department, were allegedly whisked away to an unknown destination, with the kidnappers demanding a ₦20 million ransom for their release.

As insecurity continues to spread across key highways in northern Nigeria, how many more travellers must be abducted before authorities regain control of these routes?

BREAKING: Bandits loyal to Isiya Kwashen Garwa have imposed fresh levies of ₦10 million each on Garin Lamido and Yan Shuni communities all in Bakori LGA of Katsina State. This comes despite multiple peace agreements previously reached between local authorities, stakeholders and the armed group.

The renewed extortion has sparked widespread panic, forcing many residents to flee their homes. The situation raises urgent questions about the effectiveness of these peace deals and the mechanisms in place to enforce them.

Bandits ambush police patrol in Katsina, four officers killed

Four police officers were killed and two others injured when suspected armed bandits ambushed a patrol along the Guga–Bakori road in Katsina State.

Sources told Zagazola Makama on Wednesday that the attack occurred on Jan. 27 at about 12:45 p.m., targeting operatives of the 27 Police Mobile Force (PMF), Guga Camp, during a routine patrol.

According to the source, the driver of the patrol vehicle lost control after coming under fire, causing the vehicle to crash by the roadside. Officers who died on the spot were identified as UC ASP Abubakar Abdullahi, Insp. Umar Ahmed, and Sgt. Kailani Kabir.

The source added that the assailants carted away the officers’ weapons, including an AK-47 rifle loaded with 30 rounds, a Tokarev pistol with eight rounds, and a long-range gunner rifle.

Two other officers sustained injuries: Cpl. Daniel Japet sustained a fracture, while Cpl. Abdulaziz Sani suffered a gunshot wound.

The Area Commander, Funtua, promptly mobilised joint police alongside troops of Operation FANSAN YANMA to the scene. Victims were evacuated to the General Hospital, Funtua, for autopsy and medical treatment.

Security forces have blocked all potential exit routes, and cordon-and-search operations are ongoing to apprehend the perpetrators and recover the missing arms.

SAD NEWS: This afternoon, four bandits riding a motorcycle stormed Kitibawa community in Makera ward, Dutsin-Ma LGA of Katsina State. According to the residents, the bandits seized mobile phones from residents at phone-charging points before moving to a fuel seller where they took fuel without resistance.

Witnesses said that as they were leaving the town, they fired two gunshots into the air, causing panic among residents. Shortly afterward, they intercepted a civilian on the outskirts of the community and forcefully took his motorcycle before escaping.

The incident has raised fresh concerns among residents, coming despite a peace agreement said to have been reached with armed groups in Dutsin-Ma LGA. With such attacks still occurring openly during the day, questions are now being asked about the effectiveness and credibility of the peace deal:

• Has it already begun to collapse?

Five Boko Haram terrorists, three vigilantes killed in Gwoza ambush in Borno

At least five suspected Boko Haram terrorists and three local vigilantes were killed on Friday following an ambush along the Ngoshe–Pulka Road in Gwoza Local Government Area.

Sources told Zagazola Makama that the attack occurred at about 2:30 p.m. when unknown gunmen engaged members of the Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF) and Hunters Group on a routine patrol.

In the ensuing gun battle, five terrorists were killed, while three CJTF members Yunusa Ali Ananicha, Adamu Zakari, and Daddy Ali, also lost their lives.

The bodies of the CJTF members were evacuated to Gwoza General Hospital, certified dead on arrival, and subsequently released to their families for burial according to Islamic rites.

Troops of Operation HADIN KAI maintained a cautious alert along the axis following the incident while vigilance and reinforced patrols in the area was encouraged to prevent further attacks.
