Un soldato israeliano ha distrutto a martellate la storica statua del Cristo crocifisso della chiesa locale. L’IDF ha confermato l’episodio, condannato il gesto e sanzionato i due militari coinvolti. Come sostituzione, l’esercito israeliano ha consegnato una piccola croce metallica con immagini di santi, ritenuta inadeguata e rifiutata dalla comunità cristiana di Debel.

Pochi giorni dopo, i militari italiani di UNIFIL hanno trasportato e installato sull’altare una nuova statua del Crocifisso, fedele all’originale. Il Nunzio Apostolico Paolo Borgia ha presieduto la cerimonia. Uno dei soldati italiani ha baciato con rispetto la fronte della statua.

The southern Lebanese Christian village of Debel drew international attention after a cross was vandalized by an Israeli soldier, drawing widespread condemnation. Residents expressed gratitude for the solidarity they received from around the world, saying it renewed their strength and brought attention to their village. They also said that the IDF replaced the cross following the incident, while a new cross was sent aswell from Italy through UNIFIL and it was installed in a ceremony attended by Archbishop Paolo Borgia and Church representatives.

This city in Israel will never make it to the news.

In this city, Muslims, Christians and Jews live together, work together, and marry each other.

I went to Haifa, Israel to see it for myself. There are no Arab neighborhoods or Jewish neighborhoods. Everyone lives together. The hospitals are 50% Arab, 50% Jewish. The biggest tech companies in Haifa like Google, Microsoft, and Apple are full of Arab and Jewish engineers.

But you will never see this story on the news. Because peace doesn't make it to the news. I saw it with my own two eyes - the people of Haifa will never stop trying for coexistence.
