While the rest of India celebrates Sharad Purnima,
Mithila/Bengal/Assam/Orrisa celebrates the grand festival of Kojagra/Kojagori Lakshmi Puja today

reflecting the shared cultural and religious traditions of the region.

It is believed that on this sacred night, Goddess Lakshmi descends to Earth and asks, Ko Jagrati? meaning, Who is awake. Those who remain awake in devotion and worship are believed to receive the divine blessings of Goddess Lakshmi.

In Mithila Kojagra holds a particularly special place and is celebrated with unique traditions. Homes are beautifully decorated with traditional lamps and Aripan/Alpana (Mithila's traditional floor art).

For newlyweds, especially the groom, this festival is one of the most significant celebrations. The bride's family sends Bhaar (traditional gifts and offerings), filling the with joy and festivity.

The night is filled with traditional rituals, including the groom's Chumawan ceremony, the playing of the traditional Kaudi game, and moments of laughter and celebration with family members.

Sharing paan and Mithila's GI-tagged makhana (fox nuts) as prasad is an essential part of Kojagra.

Kojagara is one of the traditional folk festivals of Mithila. The festival’s rituals are performed at the groom’s house at night.

According to popular folklore in Mithila Raja Janak celebrated this festival after the marriage of Shri Ram and Goddess Sita, though the tradition is believed to be much older.

The bride’s family sends a Bhaar to the groom’s house.. usually containing fruits, khaja, makhana, batasha, paan and other things.

In the evening, the groom wears clothes sent by his in-laws and a traditional Mithila paag. The women of the family and community perform the Chumawan ritual with him. After that a few elderly men bless him while chanting the Durvakshat Mantra.

The groom then plays Pachisi with his brother-in-law. The dice and silver cowries used in the game are brought by the bride’s family and the loser gives a gift to the winner. Meanwhile women sing traditional Maithili folk songs.

Makhana holds special significance during the Kojagara festival. On this occasion, paan, supari, and makhana are used to welcome guests and are distributed among the members of the community.

On the occasion of Kojagara, the groom’s family also organises a Brahmin Bhojan at night.

Madhushravani and Kojagara are two important festivals celebrated after marriage in Mithilanchal with Madhushravani being celebrated for women and Kojagara for men.

Bihar is slowly forgetting how to dance to its own music.

During Navratri, our cities light up with Dandiya nights. There is nothing wrong with celebrating another culture. The question is: when will we celebrate our own with the same enthusiasm, pride and glamour?

Where are the public celebrations of Jat-Jatin, Jhijhiya, Launda Naach, Bidesia and the countless folk traditions that once gave Bihar its distinct cultural identity?

First, our languages began losing space to Hindi. Then our traditional food started being treated as something less sophisticated than what came from elsewhere. And now, even our dances and folk traditions seem to be fading from our public celebrations.

We are becoming excellent consumers of other people’s culture while slowly forgetting the cultural wealth we already possess.

The irony is that Bihar doesn’t lack culture. It lacks the confidence to celebrate its own culture.

Dandiya is not the problem. Our indifference towards our own traditions is.

A society doesn’t lose its culture in one day. It loses it a little at a time—when children stop learning their mother tongues, when folk artists struggle to earn a living, when traditional music is dismissed as outdated, and when we need an event from another culture to make a celebration look fashionable.

We cannot keep talking about Bihar’s glorious past while allowing its living traditions to disappear from the present.

If we don’t dance to our own music today, one day we may have to organise cultural festivals just to remember what our grandparents once danced to naturally.

#रसनचौकी : मिथिला का 'फोक बैंड' 😍

बचपन से ही नवरात्रि के पावन अवसर पर मिथिला के मंदिरों और पूजा पंडालों से गूँजती ‘रसनचौकी’ की मंगल ध्वनि सीधे आत्मा को छू लेती थी। ढोल, ताशा और पिपही के सुंदर समन्वय से गूँजता इसका मधुर संगीत हर उत्सव को मंगलमय बना देता है।

ऐसे में आज जब अपने गाँव के दुर्गा मंदिर परिसर में रसनचौकी की मधुर ध्वनि सुनाई दी, तो ठहरकर इसका आनंद लेने से खुद को रोक नहीं सका। डीजे और बैंड-बाजा के इस दौर में भी यह पारंपरिक ‘फोक बैंड’ मिथिला की लोक-सांस्कृतिक पहचान को जीवंत रखे हुए हैं और लोकपर्व, शादी-विवाह, मटकोर, यज्ञोपवित आदि जैसे शुभ अवसरों पर इसकी कर्णप्रिय ध्वनि मन को मोह लेती है।

मिथिला की इस अनूठी रसनचौकी परंपरा और इससे जुड़े कलाकारों की साधना में हमारी माटी की सोंधी सुगंध रची-बसी है। अपनी लोक-संस्कृति का सम्मान और इन कलाकारों को प्रोत्साहन देना हम सबकी साझा जिम्मेदारी है।

मिश्र टोल, पाही, मधुबनी का "अक्षित वत्स" एक बहादुर मैथिल बच्चा है, जो पूरी हिम्मत और ताकत के साथ ब्लड कैंसर (ल्यूकेमिया) से लड़ रहे हैं। उनका इलाज राजीव गांधी कैंसर अस्पताल, दिल्ली में चल रहा है, लेकिन यह लड़ाई उनके छोटे से शरीर और हमारे पूरे परिवार के लिए बेहद कठिन है।

अक्षित की #माँ प्रीति कुमारी जी का कहना है - "मैं अपने बेटे को हर दिन दर्द से गुजरते हुए देख रही हूँ। उसे कमजोर, थका हुआ और अपना सामान्य बचपन जीने में असमर्थ देखना मेरे लिए बेहद पीड़ादायक है। किसी भी माँ के लिए अपने बच्चे को इस तरह तकलीफ में देखना बहुत कठिन होता है, लेकिन हम उम्मीद बनाए हुए हैं और उसके स्वस्थ होने के लिए प्रार्थना कर रहे हैं।

डॉक्टरों ने बताया है कि यक्षि‍त को लगातार इलाज और तत्काल चिकित्सा देखभाल की आवश्यकता है, जिसके लिए हमें 12,00,000 रुपये की जरूरत है। यह राशि हमारे लिए बहुत बड़ी है और हम इसे अपने दम पर जुटाने में सक्षम नहीं हैं। हमने अपनी क्षमता के अनुसार अब तक काफी खर्च किया है, लेकिन इलाज अभी पूरा नहीं हुआ है। हर जांच, दवा, अस्पताल की यात्रा और इलाज का प्रत्येक चरण यक्षि‍त के जीवन के लिए महत्वपूर्ण है। हम उसे स्वस्थ होने, अपने घर वापस आने, फिर से मुस्कुराने और वह जीवन जीने का अवसर देना चाहते हैं, जिसका हक हर बच्चे को है। लेकिन मदद के बिना हम यह लड़ाई जारी नहीं रख सकते.
