Thank you to all who fought and sacrificed in freedoms defense all those years ago. Incredible footage here. Blessed that both my uncles survived and will never forget the over 400,000 who did not come home.
Today marks the anniversary of D-Day - a moment that changed the course of history.
We remember the courage, sacrifice, and service of all those who took part in the D-Day landings.
Their bravery changed history. Their legacy lives on.
Lest we forget.🌺

This morning at the World War II Memorial, we pause to honor the courage and sacrifice of those who stormed the beaches of Normandy 82 years ago today. 🇺🇸

A major turning point of World War II, the Battle of Midway began #OTD in 1942. With a combination of skill, determination, intelligence and luck, the U.S. Navy earned a decisive victory over the Japanese in the Pacific. We remember those who fought and fell at the World War II Memorial.
Kaikai is 11 months old and nearly every one of those days has been spent at our Kaluku Neonate Unit.
This tiny baby was rescued as a newborn from the Mara after rangers discovered her near the body of a dead female elephant. Since that fateful day, she's been raised by some of our most experienced Keepers — Misheck, Joseph and Simon — who shepherded her through the notorious teething stage and will continue to care for her through toddlerhood and beyond.
No cardboard box is safe from her. No milk feed gets mixed without her say-so. Sound like the kind of character you'd like to support? Adoptions help fund the daily care, milk feeds and mud baths she needs to thrive.

Let your eyes adjust to the dazzling fireflies at @GreatSmokyNPS in Tennessee and North Carolina. The synchronous fireflies (aka lightning bugs) are among the 19 species found in the park. 💡
The bald eagle became a symbol of the United States in 1782.
Since then, generations of Americans have defended the freedoms represented by that symbol.
This Memorial Day, we honor the service members who gave their lives for our country and remember the freedoms that allow Americans to experience and share our public lands and wildlife.
As our nation approaches the Freedom 250 milestone, we remember that freedom has always carried a cost.
All gave some. Some gave all. Honoring all the members of our armed forces who gave what President Abraham Lincoln called "the last full measure of devotion," Memorial Day is one of the most important and solemn days on the National Mall. #WashingtonDC
This Memorial Day, we honor and remember the courageous souls who made the ultimate sacrifice for our country. Their bravery inspires us to appreciate the beauty of our public lands, where we can reflect and find peace.
In celebration, enjoy a fee-free day at our public lands! Whether you're hiking, camping, or simply soaking in the tranquility, please recreate responsibly:
🌳 Pack out what you pack in
🌳 Stay on designated trails
🌳 Respect wildlife and fellow visitors
This weekend is more than a three-day break or the unofficial start of summer. It's a time to reflect on the bravery and sacrifice of those who gave their lives in service to our country.
National memorials like the Vietnam Veterans Memorial offer space to gather, mourn and honor the fallen. As we enjoy the freedoms they protected, may we also take time to honor those who made it possible.

She arrived at just one week old – traumatised, crying, pacing her stable through the night.
Today, Kaikai turns one. And if you've followed her story, you'll know she's been running Kaluku ever since she arrived.
Mud baths are among her favourite, as is marching ahead with the confidence of an elephant ten times her age. She's extremely intelligent, and utterly convinced she's the centre of the universe. And she's not wrong. It's Kaikai's world – we merely exist in it.
Happy birthday, little princess.

Public lands are for all people. For decades, Interior has worked to improve access to public lands and create new and innovative ways to support participation and accessibility.
On Missing and Murdered Indigenous Peoples Awareness Day, we recognize the ongoing crisis of violence affecting Indigenous communities. We stand with Native American and Alaska Native families seeking justice, safety, and healing.
Hang out with Kaikai for a minute.
Curious and full of fun, this ten-month-old little girl turns everything into a toy – and the tyre is one of her favourites. Sometimes she likes to rest on it. Other times she shows it who's boss – something she likes to do with the Keepers too! They've given Kaikai her own designated patch overlooking the milk-mixing area, so she can supervise bottle preparation each morning.

Rise and shine, the elephant way!
This was taken two years ago – but in many ways, it remains a poignant scene. As a tiny baby, Natibu was found submerged and stuck inside a manhole. He arrived at our Kaluku Nursery deeply traumatised, especially in confined spaces – even his stable unsettled him. We patiently earned his trust, showing him that he was loved and in safe hands. To see him so comfortable inside his bedroom – and quite cheeky to boot – was a triumph indeed.
Natibu's journey back to the wild is still in its early days. You can become part of his story by adopting him, as a gift for yourself or someone special: https://t.co/vpVGVBctmt
