There's a particular flavor of narcissism where someone assumes they're the only one who ever works just because they don't see someone else working at the same time as them. It doesn't matter if you worked all day and are now resting, or even taking a scheduled break. If they don't see you working right now, that means you never work, you're lazy, and they do everything and sacrifice everything for you, and this fuels their martyr complex.

I don’t think it’s so much about him minimizing slavery’s role in the conflict as it is highlighting that many people in the North were racist too and weren’t fighting because they saw slaves as equal. Definitely not in the way it’s often painted today, where all Northerners are treated as though they shared modern views on race.
