🇩🇰Denmark has moved a battlegroup across the Baltic Sea to 🇱🇻Latvia under heavy #JEF nations protection.

Before the RoRo vessel MV ARK Germania carrying armour and vehicles sailed, a 🇬🇧UK P-8 Poseidon searched the south-western Baltic for potential surface and submarine threats.

The merchant ship was escorted by Danish frigate 🇩🇰 HMDS Esbern Snare, 🇸🇪 Swedish corvette HSwMS Nyköping and other maritime patrol aircraft.

More than 800 Danish troops and vehicles are now at Camp Valdemar, joining the Canadian-led NATO brigade defending Latvia.

They came in the fog... Early morning, May 6, 1527, and a force of 20,000 unpaid, mutinous soldiers materialized out of the mist on the walls of Rome. No artillery. No official orders from the Emperor who technically commanded them. Just 20,000 men who hadn't been paid in months and had decided that the holiest city in Christendom would settle the debt.

Standing between them and everything inside was a force of 189 men.

The Swiss Guard.

They had been in Rome since 1506. Trained, loyal, the most disciplined infantry in Europe - the men who had, ironically, taught the German Landsknechts most of what they knew about fighting in formation. In 1527, 189 of them guarded the Pope, the Vatican, St. Peter's Basilica, and the accumulated treasure of a thousand years of Christendom.

One hundred and eighty-nine against twenty thousand.

The army's commander, Charles III, Duke of Bourbon, led the first charge himself. He was visible from the walls by design - wearing a white cloak over his armor so his men could follow him in the fog. He was scaling a ladder against the outer wall when someone shot him. He fell. He was dead before his men reached the top.

And that was when it got worse.

A general who dies in the first minutes of an assault leaves behind 20,000 men with no one to restrain them. The Landsknechts poured over the walls. They were Protestant, most of them, and they were coming for the Pope. They had decided weeks ago, camping hungry outside the city, that Rome owed them everything it had.

The 189 guards split.

Forty-two of them - under a lieutenant named Herkules Göldli from Zurich - grabbed Pope Clement VII and ran. Not for the gates. Into the walls. The Passetto di Borgo is an 800-metre secret passage built inside the top of the city wall, connecting the Vatican directly to Castel Sant'Angelo. A torch-lit barrel vault. Wide enough for one man at a time. Forty-three people ran its entire length in the dark.

Witnesses would later say that if the Pope had stopped to say three more prayers, the Imperials would have reached him before he reached the door.

The remaining 147 guards turned and faced the 20,000. Their commander, Kaspar Roist, was wounded in the fighting and fell back to his house. The soldiers followed him there. They killed him in front of his wife.

The rest of the guards were pushed back step by step across the Vatican grounds until they had nowhere left to go but the steps of St. Peter's Basilica itself. They made their last stand there. All 147 of them, on the steps of the most sacred building in the Western world, and EVERY SINGLE ONE was killed.

The pope they were protecting reached Castel Sant'Angelo alive.

An eyewitness to what followed wrote the only description most historians still quote: "Hell itself was a more beautiful sight to behold."

Over the next months, Rome's population collapsed from 55,000 to 10,000. Six to ten thousand civilians were killed. Ninety percent of Rome's art treasures were stolen or destroyed. The invaders forced open the papal tombs in St. Peter's Basilica. They dressed one of their own in papal robes and paraded him through the streets, mocking. And Protestant Landsknechts, in a final act of contempt, found Raphael's fresco "Disputa del Sacramento" on the wall of the Vatican's Room of the Segnatura and scratched two things into it with a blade.

"V K IMP" - Long live Emperor Karl.

And underneath it: the name "Luther."

Those words stayed hidden in the paint for 472 years, until Vatican restorers found them in 1999.

Frigate RFS Admiral Kasatonov escorted the merchant vessels MV General Skobelev, MV Akademik Pashin and MV Sparta. These vessels are usually tasked with providing direct support to the Russian Military, possibly currently attempting to re-establish presence at Tartus in Syria.

🇺🇸USN TRACKING: CSG-12 Enters the Red Sea
Apr 20 Landsat 8-9 imagery confirms the shift in the US naval footprint: the USS Gerald R. Ford (CVN-78) has moved out of the Eastern Med.

Spotted the Ford alongside 2x Arleigh Burke-class destroyers and 1x USNS Replenishment/Oiler operating in the Northern Red Sea.

The CSG is back to her operating box off the coast of Al Wajh, where she was prior to the NB Suez transit

🇸🇪The Swedish Coast Guard has detained the Panamanian bulk carrier Hui Yuan near Ystad after Swedish aviation spotted the ship washing coal waste at sea, SVT reported.

The ship was en route from Russia to Las Palmas and is currently being towed to the Swedish coast.
