Tamilnadu has never seen any politician quite like Vijay.

For decades, “Dravidian secularism” meant a nominal Hindu wearing skull cap and attending Iftar, singing Hallelujah and abusing Hindu beliefs. Or calling the faith malaria , dengue and HIV. Even temple architecture wasn’t exempt.

Prostrating in a temple (and getting photographed) would be political suicide. It would get them branded Sanghi. If anyone dared to apply a dash of thiruneeru on their forehead, the politician would tremble and reflexly wipe it away in nanoseconds.

Then Vijay happened.

He doesn’t have to visit a temple or a mosque. He can legitimately say “it’s forbidden in my faith”. Yet ,he did so , even though he knows he risks alienating “D- seculars” and hardliners of his own faith.

Some may call this election stunt. Have you seen anyone going out of his way to respect ALL religions, even for an optics ?

Skepticism is fine. Cynicism is not.

Until now, not abusing Hindu beliefs was the maximum you could expect from any politician in Tamilnadu, regardless of their faith.

Let history bear witness, that it took a courageous Christian to change the rotten status quo.

This is why it doesn’t matter to me if he’s Vijay , Joseph Vijay or Mohammed Vijay. Whether he wins the election or not, I pray for his good health and happiness.
