The man who painted this was born on this exact day in 1774. His most famous painting hides something on purpose, and it's one of my favorite details in all of art history...

It is called Wanderer Above the Sea of Fog, made by the German artist Caspar David Friedrich around 1818. A lone man stands on a rocky peak in a dark green coat, gripping a walking stick, his hair caught in the wind, looking out over an endless ocean of fog with mountains breaking through it.

It has become one of the most recognized images in the world, reproduced on countless book covers and posters. But here is the choice I find so brilliant: you never see the man's face. He stands with his back to you, gazing away into the mist. Friedrich did this deliberately, and often, so often that this pose has a name, the Rückenfigur, the figure seen from behind.

And it does something remarkable: because you cannot see his face, you are not looking at him, you are looking WITH him. He becomes a doorway. You stand where he stands, staring into the unknown, and his experience becomes yours...

Friedrich once said: "The artist should paint not only what he has in front of him, but also what he sees inside himself."

As someone who has always been a reflective person, often prone to going deep and at times to melancholy, i have always felt this painting speak to me in a way no other one does. To me it is about the moment every person meets sooner or later, when you stand at the edge of your own life and look out at a future you cannot see clearly, everything ahead of you wrapped in fog, uncertain, awed and humbled and a little afraid all at once. Friedrich painted the feeling of being human and small before something vast, and then he did the most generous thing an artist can do: he turned the man away from us, so that the vastness he faces becomes our own, and each of us fills that fog with whatever future we are most afraid to meet, standing there with him, a little less alone in facing it...

This is not a photograph, and it's not an oil painting. It might be the most unbelievable watercolor ever made...

It's called Sommarnöje, which means something like Summer Delight, and Anders Zorn painted it in 1886. Look at the water, the gentle ripples, the reflections, the wet sheen of it, and then look at the two people, the fine detail of the wooden rowboat, the woman's white dress, the light on her face.

It has the near-photographic realism of an oil painting, and it was done in watercolor, a medium so unforgiving that a single wrong stroke ruins the entire piece.

Zorn painted this in the first summer of his marriage: the woman in white waiting on the pier is his new wife, Emma, whom he had married only months before. They had just come back from their honeymoon and were staying with her family at Dalarö near Stockholm, still looking for the home where they would spend their life. The man rowing toward her is their friend Carl Gustav Dahlström. It is a real moment from the happiest season of a young couple's life, caught and held forever.

In 2010 this single sheet of watercolor sold for twenty-six million Swedish kronor, over three million dollars, the highest price ever paid for a Swedish painting.

In his own lifetime, Zorn was celebrated above all for two things: his handling of light, and his ability to paint water. Sommarnöje is where you see exactly why...
