I ordered one pancake in America. The waitress wrote it down and said, "one short stack."
Short. I am a small and humble man. A short stack sounded perfect for me. I waited with a calm heart.
She returned carrying three pancakes, each the size of my face, stacked into a tower, with a block of butter on top sliding down the sides like slow lava.
This was the short one. I did not dare ask what the tall one looked like. Some knowledge a man is not ready for.
I ate for forty minutes. I was not full. I was afraid. The tower did not shrink. I am fairly sure it was growing back faster than I could eat it.
I had to surrender. I left half. In Japan, leaving food is a deep shame. So I leaned in close and apologized to the pancakes directly, in a low voice, one by one.
The waitress asked if I wanted a box. I did not know food could be taken into custody. I declined. I did not want it following me home.
In America, is the short stack truly the small one?
I need time to prepare my spirit before I ever face the tall one.

Kei Urana (GACHIAKUTA) on the new 'WITCH HAT ATELIER' anime
"The anime for Witch Hat Atelier was so insanely good I was literally sitting there with my mouth hanging open.
So this is magic..."
Me: trying to order food in Japan with limited Japanese.
Waiter: Welcome.
Me already nervous: One ramen please.
Waiter: Spicy okay?
Me: Yes.
easy, successful, i'm basically bilingual now.
then waiter asks another question, rapid Japanese.
absolutely no survivors mentally.
Me freezes.
my brain buffering like bad WiFi.🙆🤦
Waiter patiently repeats question.
still nothing.😂
panic rising.
so I do what any intelligent person would do, i give him a thumbs up.🤷
Waiter pauses, slowly nods, walks away.
Friend: You don't even know what he asked.
Me: Confidence communicates.
ten minutes later waiter returns carrying: extra spicy ramen, three boiled eggs, rice, tiny apron, and somehow a children's spoon.
Me: ......
Friend already crying laughing.😂🤣
Me: What did I agree to.🤦
Friend: I THINK he asked if you wanted the 'challenge set.
ramen so spicy my ancestors briefly contacted me spiritually.😂🤣
whole restaurant watching respectfully as I fought for my citizenship.
Old man nearby gave me thumbs up halfway through, same thumbs up that ruined my life.🤦😂
I couldn't even be mad.
