If we love the abuser we will know that true repentance is slow and hard, and their words and promises cannot be trusted. Keep in mind that one of the most powerful weapons of deception is the use of spiritual language.

It’s easier for leaders to talk tough and say the “right things” when the reported abuser or those responsible for covering it up are gone. How leaders respond when the suspect parties are still actively present is a much better indicator of where the church stands on this issue.

This should be required for every pastor. I don't know why seminaries and denominations don't require it. This needs to change.

Why is it that abuse survivors and their family members are so often the ones whose lose their church community after disclosing abuse by a church member? The tragic truth is that loss of community is ultimately a punishment to victims for painfully bringing darkness to light.

Sexually abused children learn that relationships are for using others, good is evil and evil is good, pretense is necessary, and they are trash. Such profound lessons do not simply get dropped when they reach adulthood. These lessons become the control beliefs for the adult.
