Facebook bought a VPN for $200 million.
The app was called Onavo. it promised to "keep you and your data safe" and "block dangerous websites."
Buried in the small print: "Onavo collects your mobile data traffic. Because we're part of Facebook, we use this to improve Facebook products."
Meaning Facebook could see every app you opened, how long you used it, and how much data it consumed. all of it flowing through their VPN. Feeding their competitor intelligence operation.
Zuckerberg's internal emails showed he was specifically worried about Snapchat. its traffic was encrypted. Facebook couldn't see what was happening inside it. Onavo solved that.
Unsealed court documents revealed Project Ghostbusters. Facebook used Onavo's infrastructure to run SSL man-in-the-middle attacks on Snapchat's encrypted traffic, they decrypted it, read it and used it to inform product decisions.
and when Apple forced Onavo off the App Store in 2018 for data collection violations:
Facebook didn't stop, they rebranded it "Facebook Research" and paid teenagers between 13 and 25 up to $20 a month to install it and grant root network access to their phones, recruited via ads on Instagram and Snapchat.
Apple found out and banned that too.
Facebook's statement: "market research helps companies build better products."
No, passport may be needed to prove identity on social media so the cops know whose door to knock on at 11:30pm for expressing an opinion the government don’t like.
🚨NEWS: The Government wants Britons to face PASSPORT ID checks for social media access
"Children deserve real online protections, not a sweeping surveillance scheme that has failed across the world and will introduce new risks to their safety."
"This is not a policy for children, but one that affects every single adult using social media in the country. "
"The Government’s requirement that all of us show a passport or driving license to open a social media account is a national ID scheme by the back door." - Maya Thomas, Legal and Policy Officer

First they banned under-16s from social media.
Then they required ID from everyone else.
Then the ID became permanent.
It started with protecting children.
It ended with tracking adults.
These are not different projects.
@silkiecarlo It’s precisely because they laughed these few years that everything came to the current situation. The seizure of power and suppression of citizens' rights began much earlier than a few of years.
The social media ban for under-16s is just the start.
Lisa Nandy has admitted that the ban is merely a “staging post”. The Government can no longer claim that this is just about protecting children from online harms. It is about gaining greater control over what people can and cannot say online.
This is deeply chilling.
@Sora_per_ If algorithms feed Nazis with swastika tattoos on their butts posts with the same Nazis, then a person whose feed algorithms always feed posts with loli in micro-bikinis is a lolicon. Well, or he was looking for other girls in bikinis and these endless drawings infuriate him.
🇷🇺Russia tightened VPN restrictions the week after State Duma elections.
The election timing may be coincidence.
The crackdown is not.
The pattern is: elections happen, VPN access tightens, opposition communication becomes harder.
People who harass an actor over a fictional role they played are probably the clearest proof that the capacity to separate reality from fiction is likely IQ dependent, and that a large subset of the populace is genuinely stupid.
Apple has removed Jack Dorsey’s Bitchat from the Indian App Store at the request of India’s Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology
Bitchat is a decentralized messaging app that uses Bluetooth mesh networking, letting nearby people communicate without mobile networks, Wi-Fi, phone numbers, or a central server, so it can keep working during an internet shutdown.
Apple’s notice says the removal was requested under Section 69A of India’s IT Act, claiming the app contains content illegal in India, but does not identify the specific content.
This follows a July attempt to restrict Bitchat’s GitHub repositories. Indian authorities argued that its decentralized design could hinder lawful interception and user attribution.
@ReclaimTheNetHQ It turns out that the only real freedom exists only when the state sticks its fist up to the elbow in the ass of citizens... Literally, “freedom is slavery.” And don’t be fooled by the word “state.” These are always specific elites and their financial interests.
Emmanuel Macron says American free speech is "the opposite of free speech." In his view, freedom only exists inside a "common framework" set by the state.
He compared posting an insult online to hitting someone in the street. Those are different things, because one is speech and the other is violence.
He wants people punished for posting "nonsense," with state-backed fact-checkers deciding what qualifies. He wants a verified identity behind every social media account. He has written to Ursula von der Leyen demanding the DSA be enforced "much faster, much more forcefully."
