Marco Rubio is furious that China “monopolized” rare earths over the past 25–30 years.
Well guess what?
It was the U.S. that voluntarily handed it over because rare earth processing was too “dirty” for American soil.
China took the dirty, unwanted industry and turned it into global dominance.
Now you want it back? Sure.
Go ahead. Spend 30 years rebuilding your supply chain from scratch - if you have the patience, talent, and political will.
America wants Chinese results without Chinese sacrifice.
Wants the rewards without the hard work.
Wants to eat the cake after throwing away the kitchen.
This isn’t a “China problem.”
It’s the price you pay for decades of deindustrialization and corporate greed.
Stop blaming the builder for your own demolition.
This was easily one of the most unhinged and fear-mongering speeches by a Pentagon chief in Asia ever, with relents of the worst times of the Cold War.
Funnily enough, Hegseth started his speech by saying that "for a generation, the United States ignored this region" because they were "distracted by open-ended wars, regime change, and nation building" elsewhere.
Good start to the speech 😅 And, interesting coincidence, that very generation during which the US "ignored" Asia corresponds to the region's most peaceful and prosperous period in centuries. And to catastrophic wars and entire nations destroyed where the US chose to focus their efforts instead. Strange, isn't it? 🤔
But fear not, Hegseth says, the US are doing their utmost to "shift our focus to this region" in order to answer "the threat China poses", which "could be imminent". I'm sure the audience was very reassured 🙄
How does Hegseth define this "China threat" he's so worried about? As an "alteration of the balance of power in the Indo-Pacific", the US being "pushed out of this critical region" and China "conquering Taiwan by force."
In short the "China threat" is... China daring to become more powerful than the US in its own neighborhood.
And of course, as everyone with half a brain knows, what makes war over Taiwan more likely: is it Hegseth's ironically named "peace through strength" approach where he says the threat of war is "imminent", "insists" that everyone ramps up military spending and says the US is preparing "to fight and win, decisively"? Or maybe, just maybe, is it to keep the same "One China" approach that's worked at preserving the peace for decades?
You could make the comparison with Cuba: what if China were to suddenly go to the Western hemisphere and start saying the US threat is "imminent," demanding Mexico and Canada ramp up their military spending to 5% of GDP while lecturing them about "altering the balance of power in the Americas" and announcing China is "preparing to fight and win, decisively" against the US? Would that make war more or less likely? 🤔
Another veiled threat Hegseth made is to "beware" of "the idea of seeking both economic cooperation with China and defense cooperation with the United States," because of "the leverage that the CCP seeks with that entanglement."
The lack of self-awareness is hilarious: the guy is literally threatening and "insisting" everyone in the region ramp up military spending to 5% of GDP to align with US defense priorities at their expense, while in the same breath warning them about Chinese economic leverage. Peak American exceptionalism...
Anyhow, all this would be funny if it wasn't so fundamentally disgusting: at heart this is the US determined to prevent China, the only great power to ever reach this status peacefully, from continuing to modernize and develop itself - because in their zero-sum view of the world the very idea that 1.4 billion people might achieve prosperity without American dominance is apparently intolerable.
🇦🇺 Australia in 2015:
“Sure, lease Darwin Port to a Chinese company - it’s not profitable anyway.”
🇦🇺 Australia in 2025:
“Wait, it’s profitable now? We want it back.”
China’s ambassador:
“You leased it when it was losing money. Now it turns a profit and you want to take it back?
That’s not ‘national interest’. That’s ethical fraud.”
You don’t do business with partners like that.
You walk away - and make sure the world remembers what this teaches us:
“With the West, a contract is just a lease… until you succeed.”
Ask yourself: who’s the real threat to global investment stability?
This is crazy! We now have concrete evidence that US sanctions against China's Xinjiang province have not only failed but that the US has imported over $1 billion dollars worth of Xinjiang products in 2024 alone! 😂
Xinjiang exported more than US$20.5 billion of goods during the first four months of 2025 and is up 23.9 per cent compared with the same period last year.
Ironically the US government is the third-largest importer of those goods, with purchases rising by 153.7 per cent year on year to US1.08 billion.
But rising exports is only half the story! More than 5 million visitors entering the region from outside mainland China last year, an increase of 46 per cent year on year.
International travelers spent nearly US$4.5 billion in Xinjiang last year, nearly three times as much as in 2023.
Looks like another classic case of the US sanctions making China stronger

BREAKING NEWS: AMERICAN video makers are in shock today as the country's top film editing app suddenly vanished.
TikTok owner Bytedance shut down number one video program CapCut as well as TikTok, causing a huge uproar among filmmakers, YouTubers and Instagrammers, professional and amateur.
Analysts say this is a smart move by Bytedance, as it will galvanize the US public to demand that the government cease its relentless witchhunt against the company, which collects LESS data than almost any other equivalent app, Western or Chinese.
.
NIGHTMARE FOR FILMMAKERS
CapCut is by far the most popular app for making videos for YouTube and social media in the US and many other countries, offering hundreds of editing effects at low prices or free of charge.
And while there have been fears about the banning of TikTok for four years, the ban on CapCut came as an unwelcome shock – especially for tens of millions of Americans who would have been part-way through editing their movies today when the app stopped working.
Worldwide, there were more than a billion users of CapCut in the third quarter of 2024, of which about eight per cent were in the US, the app's second biggest market, according to https://t.co/UjGrFDD6gZ, a tech analysis website.
Given the high rate of downloads, this suggests that 90 million to 100 million Americans are currently using it – or were until today.
.
BIDEN: IT'S A 'STUNT'
Biden administration officials pointed out that they did not shut the two apps – Bytedance did, and accused the company of pulling a "stunt".
But this argument has little value, as the US authorities set January 19 as the final date, and the company simply did as it was told.
And this of course gives Donald Trump the opportunity to present himself as the rescuing hero, reviving two of America's favorite apps.
.
ISOLATED
Meanwhile, the US is isolated on losing CapCut. The rest of the world still has access to the program's high quality, high speed, video editing functions—and their citizens will no doubt make good use of them to make videos commenting on what has happened.
The US, it should be noted, was only the app's second biggest market. Number one is Russia. Indonesia and India are also big users. China has its own version of CapCut, made by the same company, called JianYing (剪映).
