Three MNPS high school science teachers have won 2025 STEM Research Grants from the Society for Science! Just 24 educators from across the nation received the grants, which are dedicated to expanding inquiry-driven science education in middle and high school classrooms.
Congratulations to Coleen Nelson-Schafer of Martin Luther King Jr. Academic Magnet High School, who will use the grant to build her invention and STEAM club and support individuals and teams to engage in authentic science and engineering research by purchasing safety and lab equipment and maker space essentials; Gregory Smith of John Overton High School, who will purchase laboratory and field equipment, including portable air quality monitors, soil testing kits, carbon dioxide probes and water quality testing supplies, to support group research projects focused on local pollution issues; and Joshua Swartz of Hillsboro High School, who will purchase a specialized freezer to store precious biological materials for research projects in the Interdisciplinary Science and Research (ISR) Program!

In line with MNPS, we will not operate our programs today. Students and families should look for communications from their program-specific instructors.
Due to inclement weather, Metro Nashville Public Schools will be closed today, April 3, 2025.
All before and after school care is cancelled unless the provider offers an inclement weather site. Families are encouraged to check with their provider for that information.
All after-school activities, including sports practices, games, performances and meetings are also cancelled.
District offices will be closed for in-person activities but working remotely. Some positions may require staff to work in person, and so employees should be working closely with their supervisors to ensure the needs of the district are being met.
