A Whatsapp message to Nara Lokesh from a specially-abled IIT ranker would transform the fate of 25 dejected youngsters who had lost all hope. Vijayawada resident Maruthi Prithvi Satyadev earned 170th rank in this year’s JEE Advanced exams under the Persons with Disability (PwD) category. The rank made Satyadev eligible for a seat in IIT Chennai. However, a minor error committed by the officials of the Board of Intermediate Education since long proved to be a bane for many specially-abled students.

Satyadev was allocated a seat in IIT Chennai in Round 1 of JoSAA Counseling. As part of admission process, he was asked to upload his Intermediate Memorandum of Marks for verification purpose. As per Board of Intermediate (BIE) norms, specially-abled students are exempted from studying & appearing in any one (1) language of the two languages. Due to this exemption, Satyadev didn’t appear for his second language examination, and went on to score an A Grade. The marks memo showed 5 subjects which also included the exempted second language. Since long, the BIE has been issuing an ‘E’ (Exemption) against the second language in the Final Certificate. Satyadev was in for a rude shock when IIT Chennai’s Document Verification department informed him that his marks memo showed only 4 subjects, and that they considered Maths A and Maths B as one single subject. Thus, he was deemed to be unqualified to take up admission. A desperate Satyadev pleaded with the authorities who directed him to approach BIE and get specific marks mentioned instead of ‘E’ in order to gain admission.

Knowing that Nara Lokesh is accessible on Whatsapp, a distraught Satyadev texted Lokesh on 22nd June, 2024, explaining his predicament. Seeing that Satyadev’s future was in grave danger, Lokesh called him and his father Jayaram to learn about the problem in detail. Lokesh immediately summoned Board officials and gave directions to mention 35 marks instead of ‘E’ on the certificates of specially-abled students. The officials acted promptly and gave a marks memo with number replacing ‘E’. Satyadev’s ordeal didn’t end here. IIT Chennai authorities directed him to get a GO released from the Andhra Pradesh Government. When Satyadev followed up, Lokesh got the concerned authorities to release GO with immediate effect. He also instructed officials to speak with IIT officials in Chennai. After the GO was released, Satyadev’s admission into IIT was confirmed. Thanks to the GO, another 24 specially-abled students apart from Satyadev received admissions into prestigious institutions like IIT, NIT, IIIT etc.

All 25 students met Lokesh at his residence in Undavalli, Amaravati to express their gratitude. Tears of joy flowed when they were felicitated by Lokesh and were each given a Dell Laptop with advanced configuration. Lokesh wished them well and asked them to contact him directly for any need. When a government is responsive, helpful and delivers services with a human touch, lives transform, and the State prospers. Democracy is all about people’s voices being heard by their governments and their requests responded to by those in power. Lokesh has set an excellent example for the Country on how a proactive administration and swift decision-making by policymakers can make the lives of ordinary people extraordinary. It’s time for other governments to listen and act like how Nara Lokesh did.
