A man stands in the open, sleeves rolled, voice unguarded, ready for the ordinary Nigerian to question him (Peter Obi) like a father answering his children at the evening fire. He offers the rarest currency in our politics: humility that does not demand applause. He makes himself small so the people may feel tall. And what do we do? We spit on the calabash of clean water and run after the one who kicks the bowl over, the one who walks with his chest swollen like a toad after rain, the one who believes the people are only useful when they are on their knees.

It is the same old madness. The same story our grandmothers told under the mango tree and we still refuse to hear.

A young woman is courted by two men. One speaks soft, works hard, shows respect, waits at the door like a man who knows a woman’s dignity is not for the taking. The other arrives with dust on his shoes and arrogance in his throat. He insults her in front of her friends, raises his hand when the mood turns, takes what he wants whether she says yes or no. And yet, night after night, she returns to the second man, lips swollen, eyes lowered, inventing excuses the way a thief invents alibis. “He is just stressed.” “He loves me in his own way.” “At least he is not boring.”

Tell me, is this love or is this the hunger of a soul that has grown addicted to the whip?

Our people have become that woman. We look at the humble man and call him weak. We look at the bully and call him strong. We cheer the one who tramples us because the sound of his boots feels like music we already know by heart. The proverb is old but it still cuts: *the dog that is used to being beaten will bark at the one who offers it meat.* We have barked so long at kindness that we no longer recognise the hand that does not strike.

Perhaps the average Nigerian is not merely a victim. Perhaps we are secret lovers of the chain. Perhaps oppression has become our preferred perfume and we spray it on ourselves every election season, smiling as the bottle runs dry. The hawk does not need to hunt when the chicks keep walking into its shadow and calling it shade.

So the question hangs in the air like smoke after a fire that refused to die: when a man finally opens the door and says, “Come, ask me anything,” why do we turn away and run toward the one who locks the door and laughs while we beg outside?

The answer, if we are honest, is uglier than any politician. It lives in us.

Von Batten-Montague-York, a US lobbying firm hired by Atiku Abubakar's campaign, released this information yesterday, and I think it flew over everyone's heads! There's hardly any news station reporting or talking about it.

Not even the opposition is talking about it.

These are the actual court documents, filed in the United States District Court for the District of Columbia on October 23, 2023. Civil Action No. 23-1816.

And what is actually inside these documents is what Nigerians should be paying attention to. 👇🏽

Page 1: Tinubu personally filed a Motion to Intervene in the case because the existing defendants were, in his lawyers' words, “not fully representing or protecting his interests.”

He wanted to intervene himself, with his own lawyers, in a case concerning the release of records about him.

Page 5: His lawyers argued that releasing the records would “negate protections” and “impair his privacy interests.”

He was asking the court to recognize his interests as a private citizen whose personal information deserved protection from disclosure.

Now get to Page 7. This one is particularly interesting. 👇🏽

Tinubu formally requested 30 days before any documents were released so he could “consult with Defendants about the documents they intend to provide, and assert applicable protections or exemptions.”

Read that slowly.

He wasn't simply sitting somewhere while the US government handled the matter. His filing asked for time to consult with the defendants about the documents they intended to release and to assert whatever protections or exemptions he believed applied.

Then you get to Page 9.

His name.

His lawyers.

His signature.

INTERVENOR BOLA AHMED TINUBU.

Now, before anybody starts screaming “propaganda,” let's be clear:

Tinubu has not been convicted of drug trafficking.

That is a fact, and it should be stated.

But another fact is that, in October 2023, while he was President of Nigeria, he personally sought to intervene in a US federal case concerning the release of records about him and asked the court for protections around those records.

And this was happening while Nigerians were being told he had nothing to hide. 🫩

So don't take my word for it.

I'm attaching the actual documents. Read them yourself.

Pages 1, 5, 7 and 9.

His filing. His lawyers. His name. His signature.

No political commentator is needed to explain the document to you.

No opposition politician is needed either.

Read it. Understand it. Then decide for yourself what you think about it.
