I hate that they always bring up Down Syndrome as justification for abortion. My son is a blessing, not a burden. And certainly not a pawn in anyone’s political agenda. The world is a better place because he is in it— undeniably.
Some quality of life statistics about ppl w/Down Syndrome & their families:
99% of ppl w/DS happy w/their lives
97% like who they are
96% like how they look
86% felt could make friends easily
94% of their siblings were proud
4/5 parents believe child gave them more + outlook
@Mamoxn No one can answer those questions definitively for ANY child. But statistically speaking:
99% of ppl w/DS are happy with their lives
97% like who they are
96% like how they look
86% felt could make friends easily.
94% of siblings were proud
4/5 parents had more +outlook on life
@MyDearestDenise More resources would be great, but it won’t decrease the abortion rate for DS. See Europe, where the abortion rate is even higher, at 97-100% depending on the country. Plus parents are bullied into abortion so they won’t “burden society” with their child.
@BladeRaisor This guy’s a scammer. He lives in NY which provides Medicaid for disabled people which covers all the things he’s supposedly raising money for: diapers/wipes & medical appointments.
@JamesTate121 You live in NY according to your funding link. Which means your son qualifies for Medicaid which covers incontinance supplies and medical appointments. Why are you trying to scam people?
@soupcanarchist Nope, not true. All we have to do is look to Europe where they have lots of social supports but the DS abortion rate is even higher at 97-100% depending on the country. Plus parents are bullied into aborting so they won’t “burden society.”
@martian_lore If support services for the disabled actually lowered abortions, then Europe’s abortion rate would be lower. Instead, it is higher, at 97 to 100% depending on the country. Plus expectant parents are also bullied to abort so that they won’t “burden society” with their child’s care
@joemorris56@HansFiene It was offered to me but when I told them it was not an option, it was never mentioned again. Since then I have heard so many horror stories of parents being bullied at every appointment to abort. Even offered to change dates on their medical records when it was no longer legal!
Yes raising a child with Down Syndrome can be difficult at times. But by far the hardest part isn’t the DS but dealing w/the discrimination he faces by people that write him off and see only his diagnosis while missing his vast capabilities and more importantly, his humanity.
@JillFilipovic Except in Europe where they have all of the coveted “social supports” you could imagine, the DS abortion rate is even higher- 97-100% depending on the country, and parents often experience extreme bullying to abort so they won’t “burden society.”
