"This... chair appears thrice within Edward's journal.

Once as a sketch. Once in use, which I shall not describe further than to say it disturbed me greatly.

And once more, in a passage of such character that I have declined to transcribe."

"Edward has given them no names. I have returned to this question more times than I can account for.

The island, I am increasingly persuaded, does not encourage many names.

Is that a mercy or a warning?"

"Four figures appear early in the journal. Each rendered with more deliberate care than the last.

Edward has given them no names. No annotation. No explanation.

I find myself wondering not who they are, but for what they were being considered."

A man - presumably of some authority - has placed his hands upon the girl's shoulders.

She does not recoil. Does this make the image more or less troubling?

I cannot yet identify him. I shall not leave this unexamined."

"I have studied one of the sketches contained in Edward's journal for some time now.

The welcoming countenance I had at first attributed to the figure now seems a most doubtful thing.

I can no longer persuade myself that any benevolence resides in him; nor comfort in the girl."
