In the summer of 1910 most Americans had no idea that a sprawling organized machine of human trafficking was operating openly in Chicago and cities across the country. Ernest A. Bell compiled eyewitness accounts into this exposé revealing how thousands of innocent girls some as young as 11 were systematically drugged imprisoned and sold into sexual slavery. The book describes those responsible for the traveling and importing of the girls as an international syndicate of procurers and traffickers who shipped victims from Europe and other cities via ports and trains to clearing houses in places like Chicago then distributed them to Denver San Francisco and elsewhere with Chicago itself serving as both a receiving and distributing station. The victims were forced night after night to serve the men who supported the hideous business. The book asserts an absolute fact that corrupt Jews were the backbone of the loathsome traffic in New York and Chicago. “Jew traders too will populate our levees with Polish Jewesses and any others who will make money for them.” In Chicago’s Levee district about a score of resorts all extremely flagrant are managed by Jews. One case details two Jews Brodsky and Jacobson taking a 16-year-old girl named McConnell and a 19-year-old named Shubert to a resort kept by Weinstein in South Chicago. The most horrific things the book mentions begin right with the methods of capture and breaking. Procurers hung around train stations amusement parks and fruit stores offering respectable jobs then slipped knock-out drops into drinks rendering girls unconscious. They woke stripped of their clothes locked behind bars in gaudy brothel rooms realizing they had been sold. The raw breaking-in involved being repeatedly assaulted by men until resistance was crushed and they submitted to the life. Fabricated debts for clothing marked up many times trapped them permanently with no street clothes and no escape. Every single night they were forced to entertain streams of men and every morning exhausted and half naked they scrubbed the entire brothel on hands and knees in rags. When girls fought back one 16-year-old had her face slashed with a razor from eye to ear leaving her permanently disfigured while pregnant from the attacks. Chinese girls as young as 11 and 12 were beaten with firewood fire tongs and hot flatirons pressed onto their bare backs until they howled. Madams and pimps threatened murder. Letters told of being kept inside for months. Disease finished them with the average girl lasting only five years before dying from venereal diseases consumption or suicide with many begging for poison. The trade also spread plagues to innocent wives and children creating blind babies and sterile brides. This system had been growing for decades by 1910 with Chicago having over 5,000 women in prostitution and 1,000 new recruits a year sixty percent tricked or forced. Nationwide the book estimated 15,000 girls imported annually plus thousands more from American farms. The horror stretched from New York ports to Pacific Coast brothels exploding in the early 1900s with railroads immigration and vice districts. Bell’s book was written to awaken parents and it helped spark the Mann Act that year. The accounts of girls waking drugged and imprisoned faces slashed bodies worked to death after nights of forced sex remain some of the most graphic descriptions of organized sexual slavery printed in America proving it was happening right here in broad daylight to ordinary girls whose parents never knew until too late.
