Just weaned 36 piglets from 3 sows. We reduced piglets mortality from 100% last year (due to financial challenges) to >5% this year, all thanks to MTN Youth Start Up Support Loan, 20k in collaboration with @InnohubConnect
We now have 78 piglets weaners and growers on the farm.

Secrets to Achieving More Piglets in Pig Farming

To maximize piglet production per sow, you need a combination of proper breeding, nutrition, and management strategies. Follow these key steps:

1. Select High-Fertility Breeds

Choose pig breeds known for large litter sizes, such as:
✅ Large White
✅ Landrace
✅ Duroc
✅ Camborough (Hybrid pigs)

2. Maintain Optimal Body Condition in Sows

A sow that is too thin or too fat will have fertility issues. Ensure proper feeding with a balanced diet rich in protein, energy, vitamins, and minerals (especially folic acid and vitamin A) to support reproduction.

3. Use Proper Heat Detection and Mating Techniques

Observe signs of heat (swollen vulva, restlessness, standing reflex).

Mate sows 12-24 hours after first heat signs for maximum fertilization.

Use double mating (mating twice, 12 hours apart) to increase conception rates.

4. Improve Boar Management

Use mature, healthy boars (9 months+) for breeding.

Avoid overworking a boar—one boar should serve 15-20 sows at most.

Ensure good boar nutrition, including zinc and selenium, for better sperm quality.

5. Implement Flushing Before Mating

Flushing (feeding high-energy feed 10-14 days before mating) increases ovulation rates, leading to larger litter sizes. Examples of flushing feeds: maize, cassava, and balanced sow feed.

6. Reduce Early Pregnancy Loss

Minimize stress (avoid moving, overcrowding, or handling sows roughly).

Ensure proper ventilation, clean water, and comfortable housing.

Provide sufficient fiber in the diet to improve embryo survival.

7. Ensure Proper Prenatal Care

Feed a well-balanced gestation diet (avoid overfeeding, which can cause obesity and stillbirths).

Conduct regular deworming and disease prevention to avoid infections.

Vaccinate against common reproductive diseases like Leptospirosis, Parvovirus, and PRRS.

8. Proper Farrowing Management

Provide a comfortable, warm farrowing environment to reduce stress.

Ensure good colostrum intake in the first few hours after birth for strong piglets.

Use cross-fostering (moving piglets between litters) if some sows have too many piglets to feed.

By following these steps, you can consistently increase litter sizes, improve piglet survival rates, and boost overall productivity in your pig farming business. Healthy sows = More piglets = Higher profits!
