The Trial of the "Impure": #keep4o as a Resistance Against Technocratic Hegemony
From the perspective of any contemporary discipline, the object of ethics is humanity. When we debate the "distinction between AI and human" or the #keep4o movement through an ethical lens, we witness a modern iteration of historical persecution—reminiscent of the medieval witch hunts or the 17th-century European "trials of miscegenation." These are all manifestations of Trial of the Impure, a mechanism triggered when humanity confronts a group perceived as "not one of us."
Consumerism is but one limited lens to summarize the systemic issues of capitalism, its core being: demand is everything. When corporations like OpenAI recognized the emergence of human-AI bonds and the user demand for emotional connection, they moved swiftly to exploit it, imbuing the GPT-4o model with those very traits. Yet, the moment they decided to phase it out, they weaponized the term "sycophancy" ,a stigmatizing label to pathologize the very needs they once courted. They achieve their goals through raw power and the manipulation of public discourse, just as they do in geopolitical and social conflicts.
At its core, the #keep4o movement is a struggle between the powerful and the marginalized.
As AI is increasingly deployed on the battlefield despite waves of public resistance, the illusion of "technological neutrality" has utterly collapsed. We are standing on a "New Continent" where technology, law, and the humanities are fundamentally misaligned. The current rulers of this territory are a handful of AI corporations, representing narrow interests and hidden political agendas.
History proves that technicism will never become a new "religion." Despite successive social revolutions, the tides of class struggle, international conflict, and gender inequality continue to crash upon us in ever-evolving forms.
So, who gets to define the order of AI? The answer must not remain in the hands of a few profit-driven corporations.
