The Chairperson of the Portfolio Committee on Home Affairs, Mr Mosa Chabane, has assured recruits employed under the @HomeAffairsSA digitisation programme that the committee will return tomorrow to engage directly on the challenges raised, including those highlighted in the media.
The committee is currently on an oversight visit to the digitisation hub to assess progress in converting DHA paper records into digital format.

The Portfolio Committee on Home Affairs is today engaging recruits under the @HomeAffairsSA digitisation programme, following concerns raised regarding alleged unfair labour practices.

Recruits highlighted inadequate working conditions, including limited access to basic amenities, with only one microwave available for over 1 000 recruits.
Concerns were also raised about the lack of sufficient kitchen space and restrictions on external food deliveries. Additionally, despite contractual provisions for overtime pay, recruits reported ongoing challenges in successfully claiming overtime.

Recruits expressed concern over the lack of employment benefits, including access to the Unemployment Insurance Fund (UIF). They further raised issues about stagnant wages, noting that despite being employed for four years, they have not received any salary increases since the programme’s inception.

@veronica_mente We will not be sold to private companies!
DHA belongs to the people, not to profit seekers.
Outsourcing is exploitation—nothing more, nothing less.

@veronica_mente Now they are lying that those graduates were never part of home affairs, but the service provider..🙄
Please intervene, I see a Cat Matlala scandal with this digitization project 🤞
The ANC and DA government are detrimental to the lives of our people especially youth. When we warned people that this privatisation is dangerous they didn’t listen. Short sightedness consumed them today we have young people being forced out of government contracts with the potential of permanent employment and benefits unto private contracts with an ultimatum. Worse this service of banks is only catering for changing greenbook to smart nothing else. Vuka Darkie.
@HomeAffairsSA@tlou_pesha Thata wena home affairs, no wonder they call you the most corrupt department! 😂😂😂😂😂 Youth development program with gradutes why neosa tseye ma grade 9?
@HomeAffairsSA The DDG told us at the Silverton Hub that DHA will give this tender to another company post July and that the new company will decide whether they want to continue with us or employ new people. DHA is avoiding labour laws!!
@HomeAffairsSA Digitisation graduates reading this… well this is news to us.
How many graduates tried applying for “entry level jobs” but were at a disadvantage because they were still part of this project?
@HomeAffairsSA@HomeAffairsSA says this was a youth employment program, not a job.
Workers were doing core government work
Workers were treated like normal employees
Digitising national records is core work of Home Affairs, not temporary community work.
