NARD COMMISERATES WITH THE FAMILY OF DR. FEMI ROTIFA AND COMMENCES INVESTIGATION INTO CIRCUMSTANCES SURROUNDING HIS DEATH

The Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) has received with deep sadness the news of the passing of one of our colleagues, Dr. Femi Rotifa (Oluwafemi Rotifa), a resident doctor at the Rivers State University Teaching Hospital (RSUTH).

We extend our heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, and colleagues and the entire Association of Resident Doctors (ARD) RSUTH community during this painful time. His untimely loss is a great blow to the medical community and to the nation at large.

As an Association, we consider every doctor’s welfare, safety, and wellbeing a matter of utmost priority. While reports in the media have linked his death to alleged prolonged working hours, we wish to state clearly that NARD will not make premature conclusions.

We are engaging with his family, colleagues, hospital management, and all relevant stakeholders to ensure that a thorough and transparent investigation is carried out.

Our members and leadership of ARD RSUTH have visited the family together with River State NMA and hospital management.

We have commenced a fact-finding process to ascertain the exact circumstances surrounding this unfortunate incident.

Only after this process will NARD issue a comprehensive position on the matter.

We use this moment to remind all employers of doctors across the country that humane working conditions and the wellbeing of healthcare workers are non-negotiable.

Recent report on the grueling work schedule seen from a Federal Teaching Hospital attest to the fact that Government and Stakeholders in our Healthcare system needs to review how doctors work in the hospitals.

Several appeal has been made with No attention to our plea. Some of our members are now coming down with serious medical conditions due to the strenuous work schedule most of our members are subjected to.

NARD calls on the government and relevant authorities to strengthen policies that guarantee safe working environments for doctors and, by extension, better care for patients.

Our departed colleague’s memory must serve as a call to action to ensure no further preventable losses occur within our ranks.

Family Announces Burial Arrangement For Actor Nkem Owoh's Daughter

The burial arrangement for Kosisochukwu Nkem-Owoh, the daughter of veteran Nollywood actor, Nkem Owoh, has been announced.

News surfaced in June that Kosisochukwu, 24, had passed away after battling liver cancer.

The burial arrangement for Kosisochukwu as announced by the family on Friday showed that she would be buried on August 24.

It read: "The family of Nkem Owoh (Osuofiasn) of Umunevo Owonta of Umungwu clan in Amagu village, Udi town, Udi local government, Enugu State regrets to announce the death of our daughter. The deceased will be buried on August 24."

Nigercem was the first indigenous company, manufacturing cement in Nigeria. The company was built by the government of Eastern Region in 1957. It's located in Nkalagụ, Ebonyi State.

I have written countless times about the economic growth of the defunct Eastern Region. It was one of the fastest growing economic region in the world, competing with the Asian Tigers and the rest.

I will address that later, for now, let me not digress.

Back to Nigercem built by the Eastern Region government. Remember, it was the first indigenous cement factory in the history of Nǐgeria.

This company employed many people and made them very wealthy in the past, during the government of Eastern region.

Last production was in Sept. 2000. Nigerian factor happened which is not far from monopolization of industry and diverse policies.

Today, Nigercem is a defunct industry.

Many stories about it. I am more interested in the history surrounding it.
