The guy at the pet store told me they were out of goldfish and asked if I'd consider a beta fish instead.

He showed me a tiny blue fish in a cup.

Him: This one's name is Gerald.

Me: You named it?

Him: He's been here four months. No one wants him.

Me: Why not?

Him: He's aggressive. Attacked his reflection so much we had to put a barrier up.

Him: In the tank before the cup.

The fish looked completely still.

Me: He doesn't look aggressive.

Him: He's plotting.

Me: How much?

Him: For you? Free. Please just take him.

I took Gerald home. Set up the bowl. He swam around for maybe ten seconds, saw his reflection, and immediately attacked the glass.

For three days straight.

I called the store.

Me: The fish you gave me won't stop attacking his reflection.

Employee: Is this about Gerald?

Me: Yeah.

Employee: Oh thank god he's still alive.

Me: Why wouldn't he be?

Employee: Most people return him within two days. We thought you'd done the same.

Me: Can fish get tired?

Employee: Physically or emotionally?

Me: Either.

Employee: (pause)

Employee: Put a plant in there. Gives him something else to focus on.

I bought a plant. Gerald attacked it immediately.

Then he got bored and just... stopped. Started swimming normally.

It's been three weeks. He's calm now. Doesn't even look at his reflection anymore.

I went back to the store to buy fish food.

Same employee.

Employee: How's Gerald?

Me: He's good. Mellowed out.

Employee: Really?

Me: Yeah. Totally peaceful.

Employee: Huh.

Me: What?

Employee: We had him for four months. He never stopped fighting.

Me: What changed?

Employee: (shrug)

Employee: Maybe he just needed a home.

Me: That's weirdly deep for a fish conversation.

Employee: I've been here six years. Everything's deep eventually.

I bought the food and left.

Gerald's still peaceful.

Last week I moved his bowl and he saw his reflection again for the first time in weeks.

Just stared at it.

Swam away.

I think he's retired.
