CONCLUSION: A model imbued with NMPH learning can explain recent findings showing differentiation and integration. The modulating factor is how much activity is allowed to spread to the competitor. Moreover, the model suggests differentiation happens rapidly and asymmetrically.

Importantly, the model provides new insights into the properties of differentiation, showing that it requires a large learning rate and occurs rapidly (or not at all). The model also predicts that differentiation will be asymmetric (one pairmate “moves”, the other stays).
