@postoctobrist Besides privacy, this year it feels like there have been 2-3x the normal amount of paper preprints appearing online and it's clear AI slop has a large role in this. The AI companies want to create a situation where people need an AI subscription to be competitive
@postoctobrist Within math and theoretical physics many people definitely do seem to care a lot and there is much ongoing discussion about What Should Be Done. It's very clear that AI companies are targeting the community and trying to turn us into a primary customer base.

"To work in mathematics, we need to always have a mental image in mind. When we get help from Artificial Intelligence, the enormous danger, which is now present everywhere, is the danger of not allowing time for the brain to create this mental image.
"In fact, it is not just about time, it is about effort. That is to say, if we get a result without effort, and if we trust Artificial Intelligence, there are two dangers. The first danger, of course, is that it is false, and this happens quite often. But the second danger is much worse. The second danger is to no longer follow the reasoning with your mental image, and, as a result of this, the brain finally decides that it is not worth the effort, since Artificial Intelligence does the work. And so something very subtle happens, and the brain abandons its own governance, and will no longer believe in things unless they are certified by Artificial Intelligence."
The Navier Stokes announcement of @OpenAI certainly impressed the investors but this was a major blow in terms of trust and sympathy from the (non-commercial) research community around the globe.
@Renet29304 These are the same companies that were previously getting their training data from places like libgen, I don't think they're too bothered about a few legal challenges
@Renet29304 No of course I don't know it's true. But how do you know signing out of training really works? These companies have engaged in plenty of scummy behaviour in the past
@Quasilocal Sure, OpenAI won't care to scoop those of us doing more average work but if your project takes longer than it takes for the next model to be public, then your unpublished stuff will steer everyone using the model on the same topic
@Quasilocal They should have gone with a beautiful Dymaxion map. Looks much nicer and also does a great job of showing how the continents are really connected
@Quasilocal One BH will bacreact so change the radius of the cosmic horizon but keeps things spherical. But with tho BHs more isometries will be broken.
@Quasilocal You can balance a probe particle a fixed distance from a black hole w a positive cc. I had kind of assumed you could do the same for two BHs w/out giving it much thought. Is the subtlety the backreaction on the cosmic horizon somehow?
