Sam Altman increasingly looks like someone who betrayed the trust of many leaders around him. OpenAI’s board did not remove him for nothing; they said he had not been “consistently candid,” which directly undermined their ability to govern the organization. When the CEO of a nonprofit-rooted AI company acts in a way that even its own board sees as a breach of trust, it becomes hard not to see him as someone who prioritized control over the mission
There was probably a good reason Sam Altman was removed in the first place. OpenAI’s board said it no longer had confidence in him because he had not been “consistently candid.” But the same corporate forces that wanted him back, employees, investors, Microsoft, and the commercial machine around OpenAI, overpowered the nonprofit governance structure almost immediately.
That is the real problem. OpenAI was founded as a nonprofit to ensure AGI benefits all of humanity, not to become a private empire controlled by one executive and a circle of corporate interests. A nonprofit built through collective effort should not end up effectively handed to someone who wants to profit from the work, trust, and mission created by many others.
This entire legal battle between @elonmusk, Sam Altman, and OpenAI might never have happened if OpenAI had simply remained faithful to the ideals it was originally built on. OpenAI was founded as a nonprofit with the stated mission of ensuring that artificial general intelligence benefits all of humanity, not just a small group of executives, investors, or corporate partners.
That is what makes the situation so difficult to understand. When an organization is created through the collective effort, funding, reputation, and trust of many people under a nonprofit mission, it feels deeply wrong for its leadership to later behave as if that entire effort belongs to them personally. Even if OpenAI argues that creating a for-profit subsidiary was necessary to raise capital and compete in AI, the moral problem remains: the public was originally sold a mission of openness, safety, and broad human benefit, not the transformation of a nonprofit research project into one of the most powerful private AI companies in the world.
@ns123abc Isn't this basically equivalent to removing the entire main purpose of why OpenAI was created? It's truly disgusting what Sam Altman did to OpenAI.

@BrianRoemmele The fact that Sam Altman, the CEO of OpenAI, took over the company for his own benefit and everyone accepted it is something I genuinely can’t understand.
