People are asking what Annamalai actually achieved for the BJP in Tamil Nadu.

​The truth is, the BJP has historically been the most disliked party in the state. It never possessed a local mass leader, like the late Kamarajar was for Congress, resulting in zero connection between the party and the public.

That is exactly what Annamalai meant when he remarked that the central leadership failed to understand the state's language. He was referring to its political grammar, not its spoken tongue.

​Annamalai entered the scene as an unknown figure in Tamil Nadu, representing an unpopular party. Before his tenure, one only has to look at the hostile reception even our Prime Minister used to get. There would hardly be any organic crowd. That was the bleak environment in which Annamalai took charge of the state unit.

​He put in tremendous effort to shift this narrative, and he reasonably succeeded. A notable section of the public began favoring the BJP and the Prime Minister simply because they found Annamalai himself to be trustworthy.

Historically, even when the DMK or AIADMK allied with the BJP, regional leaders had to offer exhaustive explanations to a wary public. In Tamil Nadu, an alliance with the BJP was widely viewed as an electoral liability that actively cost votes.

​Viewed in this context, shattering those entrenched narratives and increasing the party's vote share from a meager 2% to around 12% was a phenomenal achievement. Yet, after the public saw how he was sidelined as State President, the vote share immediately crashed back to 2%.

​True achievement must always be measured by the progress made against what was previously deemed impossible.
