The Kukke Subrahmanya Temple

The story begins with Rishi Kashyapa and his two wives, Kadru and Vinata.

Kadru became the mother of the Nāgas, including the mighty Vāsuki, while Vinata became the mother of Garuda.

One day, Kadru and Vinata placed a bet on the celestial horse. They made a wager: whoever lost would become the other's slave.

Kadru won deceitfully and thus Vinata became Kadru's slave.

Garuda gave Amrita to the Nāgas to free his mother.

But the animosity between Garuda and the Nāgas continued.

Garuda began hunting serpents, and the Nāgas lived in constant fear of him.

Hounded relentlessly, Vāsuki sought a sanctuary where Garuda could not reach him. He chose the hidden subterranean Biladwara cave near Kumara Parvata in the Western Ghats of Karnataka.

There, Vāsuki performed severe penance to Shiva, praying for lasting protection.

Pleased by his devotion, Shiva assured Vāsuki that His own son, Subrahmanya, would come and stand beside him eternally.

That is what makes Kukke so unique.

When it comes to profundity, it is hard to beat Sanskrit.
