Monensin is not approved for human consumption, and 60% of samples from America's largest fast-food chains tested positive for it. Narasin was found at the highest concentration of any fast-food sample tested.

The findings were described as "concerning" by a University of Minnesota infectious disease specialist and were presented to Congress during a briefing on food toxicity.
