Such a beautiful example of how to engage students in #countingcollections in grades 2-5. If your students struggle with place value understanding, do yourself a favor and take this for a test drive👇👇👇
Key to great computational skills? Great reasoning & number sense! Crazy when "experts" say computation doesn't matter but problem-solving does. Impossible to separate the 2. Being good at one is key to being good at the other. Use REASONING to solve the puzzles below. Enjoy!
Regrouping is all about shifting 10s, not trading 10s. It's a Gr 1 skill that kids then use in Gr 2 to subtract with regrouping and in Gr 3 to divide with regrouping. When can shifting actually start? In K, to learn all the combinations that make 10!
In every grade, there are KEY skills, strategies & standards that kids have to master. In K, knowing combinations that make 10 is critical. Should kids be counting to find the parts & total? Not by this time of the year. Using the right progression of models is also SO important!
So much fun teaching 1st graders to play Pig today! The cheers, the groans, the connections, the talk about numbers! Such #MathJoy!

Are your third and fourth graders working with area and perimeter? They'll find this @openmiddle problem extra challenging! https://t.co/WDm91GQ8F5 #iteachmath
Greg Jr & I spend almost every waking minute on our Fractions curriculum. Our Unit Assessments don't look like any other program. Here we're assessing Fraction Comparison. How many ways can you compare the 2 fractions below without making thirds into ninths? Great problem for PD!
One of our districts just requested a STUDENT LESSON for their Kinders on teen numbers. So we're inviting EVERYONE to join the learning & fun – including Grade 1. This is a key pre-requisite skill for the Make 10 addition & subtraction strategies!

We're launching our free PreK-5 Virtual Math PLC for educators with our moderators @Debpeart1 and @bbrady_brady. This is open to everyone and you can attend the live sessions or just receive the recordings and materials. Register here: https://t.co/1iECwANKtf #MtHolyokeMath
Love working with all your kids. Next time is JAN 18 & 19. I LOVE teaching kids the hard topics that not everyone likes to teach – fractions, word problems, measurement, data, geometry. Our Jan-Feb-Mar lessons will help get your kids ready for state testing I hope gets cancelled!
We have completely re-coded our word problem generators over the holidays! Join us Jan 15 as we explore learning & story problems for K-2. Word problems are a key component of a great math program. Building meaningful progressions starting in K is the key!

How do we help students develop a deep understanding of math concepts we teach? @SarahBent86 and I are leading a free session next week to dig into these ideas and we'd love for you to join us: #iteachmath#MTBoS#MtHolyokeMath Register here: https://t.co/ybsJBSX4PP
