It is no secret that women's participation in science and technology is unbelievably undersized and when it comes to rural India, the numbers are further dwarfed. And here’s where the IIT for Villages (IViL) Team steps in to bridge the gap. Team IViL, from @iitmadras, successfully hosted its flagship project event, She-ViL STEAM, in March of this year.
She-ViL STEAM is a residential camp for talented rural schoolgirls, where selected students get to attend various STEAM-based and personality development sessions over 2 weeks. This year’s program involved about 40 school students from rural areas in Tamil Nadu from March 5th to March 14th.
Each day, volunteers from IIT Madras took sessions in Critical Thinking, English Communication, Case Studies, CFI sessions in 3D Printing and Electronics, Computer Learning, and Career Guidance. Concluding with an engaging and insightful mentor-mentee interaction. The students also visited multiple labs in the Environmental Engineering Division as well as the Sewage Treatment Plant.
The Valedictory Event, which took place on March 14th, was graced by:
Prof. Kamakoti Veezhinathan, Director
Prof. Sathyanarayana N Gummadi, Dean (Students)
Prof. Ganga Prasath S, Applied Mechanics
The project is mentored by Prof. Nathiya Guhan from the Department of Biotechnology and Prof. Pijush Ghosh from the Department of Applied Mechanics and Biomedical Engineering. The project is funded under the SRIP initiative through Dean ICSR and Dean ARC.
As India strives for inclusive growth and technological advancement, initiatives like She-ViL STEAM are crucial in empowering rural schoolgirls and fostering their interest in science and technology. She-ViL planted the seeds of curiosity, confidence, and ambition, ensuring these girls went back with a spark that could ignite lifelong passion and success.
