As I look at the rush to build very complex robots using new and unproven learning and control methods I am reminded of the history of combat aircraft. In the first world war competition was intense in aerial combat. Flat screen displays, though indispensable in modern fighter jets, and all airplanes, would not have helped at all. What was needed was better power to weight ratio engines, stronger structures, and thermal and breathing assistance for pilots. Improvements in all these were still existential a quarter century later in the second world war, though by then other things like radar were also important. But not yet flat screen displays. Technologies need to be at a certain point before some innovations are actually practically applicable, despite the fervor of some want to be innovators.
