For an “inclusive and sustainable future” that involves disabled people, disabled people need to be listened to. We need to be involved in the decisions that affect us. Nothing about us without us. 3/3
Yesterday was International Day of Disabled People but we found it hard to commemorate. As is not unusual, the past few weeks have been difficult for disabled people. The result of the vote on the recent reading of the Assisted Dying Bill has been terrifying for so many of us 1/3
Many of us fear the implications of a state that barely cares for us having the option to legally kill us. We’ve also seen the release of a white paper which proposes to force mentally ill people into work and attacks on the welfare system that many disabled people rely on. 2/3
“Dave Onawelo suffered from sickle cell disease, and accurately told them he was suffering from sickle cell crisis - staff told his mother she was being anxious”
Is a VERY key point in this story!!!!!!!!
This is outrageous 🤬
The discrimination of @KateStanforth
Disability Conditions do vary that is a fact for many disabled people
Kate we support you

A quick heads-up to DWP wonks that a huge tranche of almost 30 research reports has been published today (presumably held back under the previous government?) covering Universal Credit, childcare, disability & pensions - lots of interesting stuff in there https://t.co/tKWv6MkofV
The proposed reforms don't address our housing needs and don't promote accessible, adaptable or wheelchair accessible housing. There was no BSL translation, and the Easy Read came on the day the consultation was meant to end. Future consultations need to do better than this.
Yes, the process is terrifying and dehumanising- we want to amplify this to cross over from the disability bubble into the main stream of understanding by those who do not have a disability
What a disabled person has to go through to exist

Found out today that national guidelines have been changed influenced by the work we did with Mind the Gap.
Every single PoC with this condition in the UK now represented and see in the guidelines
Pretty cool
The title of this article (behind a paywall), “Do Colleges Provide Too Many Disability Accommodations?” tells you all you need to know about its bias. It perpetuates a stereotype that disabled people get “perks” and unfair advantages because of their disability
I wanna scream so badly. I’m mad about @Tinu’s passing. She shouldn’t have had to spend her dying days raising money for cancer treatment.
She shouldn’t have had to ask doctors and nurses to wear masks at the hospital. This world doesn't give a damn about disabled Black women!
Life costs more for disabled people. And this price tag is rising.
On average, disabled households now need an extra £1,010 each month to have the same standard of living as others.
We're calling on the government to fix this. Will you join us? 👇

Just finished this stellar paper! All who champion neurodiversity need to explicitly acknowledge the Black feminist thinkers and indigenous African+diasporic epistemologies central to its foundation.

The biggest threat to mental health in this country isn’t ‘too generous’ benefits discouraging work. It’s a cruel, dehumanising system that treats people as worthless for being workless, leaving many oscillating between utter despair and hypervigilant brown envelope terror.
