Mr. Pradeep Kumar Mohanty, PhD Scholar, Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering (ECE), NIT Rourkela, presented a memento on behalf of the Institute to Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi at SEMICON India 2026.

The memento featured the NIT Rourkela name and institutional identity, symbolising the Institute’s contribution to India’s growing semiconductor ecosystem.

Mr. Pradeep Kumar Mohanty is the student designer of the ASCON AEAD Security Chip (C2S0091), developed under the MeitY Chip-to-Startup (C2S) Programme under the supervision of Prof. Ayas Kanta Swain and Prof. Kamalakanta Mahapatra.

🌊 Building Awareness for a Sustainable Ocean Future!

As part of Swachh Sagar Surakshit Sagar 5.0, the Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences, NIT Rourkela, organised an awareness programme and poster competition for the students of Kendriya Vidyalaya, NIT Rourkela on 16 September 2026, under the Deep Ocean Mission, Ministry of Earth Sciences (MoES), Government of India.

Around 150 students participated in the poster-making competition, expressing their creative ideas on ocean conservation, marine life and the importance of clean and safe oceans. 🌏🐠

The programme was led by Prof. Naresh Krishna Vissa, Head, Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences, NIT Rourkela, along with faculty members of the department.

Prof. Saurav Chatterjee, Dean (SRICCE), NIT Rourkela, graced the programme as the Chief Guest and joined the students in taking the pledge for cleaner and safer oceans.

Mrs. P. Neeraja, Principal, KV NIT Rourkela, encouraged the students to actively participate in Swachh Sagar Surakshit Sagar 5.0 and contribute to creating awareness about ocean conservation.

Congratulations💐to Mr. Moulik Mandal (Alumnus-2023, MSc. Atmospheric Sciences) on receiving the 'OSI PG Dissertation Award 2023' in the thematic area of Ocean and Atmospheric Sciences. The award was presented at the 9th National Conference of the Ocean Society of India (OSICON-2025), held at CSIR-NIO, Goa.

The award recognises the research carried out by Mr. Mandal during his postgraduate studies at NIT Rourkela. His thesis titled “Influence of summer monsoon intraseasonal oscillations on the occurrences of Marine Heatwaves over the North Bay of Bengal”, was carried out under the guidance of Prof. Naresh Krishna Vissa, stood out for its impactful contribution to climate and ocean research. Mr. Mandal is currently pursuing PhD at the University of Tasmania.

Best wishes to Mr. Mandal for continued success in his future academic and research endeavours.

The Indian Meteorological Society (IMS) organized annual symposium TROPMET 2024 hosted by IMS Rourkela chapter and NIT Rourkela from 10-12 December 2024. The inaugural function of the was held at BBA on December 10, 2024, and was joined by Dr. M. Ravichandran, Secretary of the Ministry of Earth Sciences (MoES), GoI as Chief Guest and Dr. Mrutyunjay Mohapatra (Director General of Meteorology, India Meteorological Department, Government of India) as Guest of Honor in the presence of Prof. K. Umamaheshwar Rao (Director, NIT Rourkela), Guest of Honor. President IMS Shri Anand Kumar Sharma and Secretary IMS Dr SI Laskar along with Prof. Sk Md Equeenuddin (Chairman, TROPMET 2024) and Prof. Naresh Krishna Vissa (Convenor, TROPMET 2024) were the dignitaries on the stage.

TROPMET 2024 hosted nearly 400 participants, delegates and award winners at NIT Rourkela. The Local Organizing committee also include Prof. Bhishma Tyagi (Secretary, TROPMET 2024) and Prof. Nagaraju Chilukoti (Co-Convenor, TROPMET 2024) from the Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences, NIT Rourkela. IMS is a premier scientific society of scientists and researchers working in atmospheric and oceanic sciences.
