@FabulouslyKeto Doing this podcast with you was my first ever podcast - but it was great fun. Since you published it, it has helped quite a few people realize that it's fine to be low carb and vegetarian
Unfortunately, the longer we continue to view obesity strictly through the lens of calories, the longer the problem will persist.
There's an important hormone component to obesity, partly genetic, mostly driven by food choices, that "hijacks" human metabolism to selectively store calories in fat cells.
What we eat, and the hormone response that follows, is at least as important as how much we eat.
SEED OILS Are Poison In A Bottle...Industrialized Seed Oils Are The Most Egregious Assault On Health & Nutrition In The Modern World.
5 Groundbreaking Research Trials Show How These Toxic Seed Oils, Touted As 'Heart Healthy', Cause Heart Disease, Cancer, Stroke & Early Death.
Research Showing Direct Disease Causation From Seed Oils:
Death: In the Sydney Diet Heart Study: Group #1 consumed butter & Group #2 consumed vegetable oil & margarine. The group consuming oil & margarine had 62% higher death rate over a 7yr period.
Heart Disease: In the Minnesota Coronary Experiment, participants who increased their consumption of corn oil & margarine had 86% more heart attacks.
Stroke: In the MARGARIN Study, after two years, the number of strokes, heart attacks & cardiovascular deaths was seven times higher in the group eating vegetable oil margarine.
Heart Attack: In the Rose Corn Oil Trial, tested replacing butter with corn oil. The result was a 92% increase in heart attacks & a 364% increased risk of death in the group consuming corn oil.
Cancer: In the Los Angeles Veterans Administration Study, the group of participants who increased fat from vegetable oil–while keeping total fat the same–were 82% higher rates of cancer.
The half-life of Seed Oils is 680 days. This means that on a cellular level, it takes approximately six years to replace 95% of the toxic seed oils in the body with healthy fats.
100 yrs ago, vegetable oils & seed oils were nonexistent in the daily diet. Today they account for 30% of the daily diet & have made their way into 90% of every packaged food & restaurant meal we eat.
Real 'Heart Healthy Fats' That Carry No Risk Of Metabolic Dysfunction Or Chronic Disease:
Animal Sourced Fats: Butter, Ghee, Tallow, Suet, Lard & Duck Fat.
Fruit Oil Saturated Fats: Unrefined Cold Pressed Virgin 100% Coconut & Avocado Oils. And pure 100% single origin cold pressed Olive Oil. (Do your research: 85% of Avocado & Olive Oils in grocery stores are 'mixed oils' with 50% Canola or Soybean Oil added)

I am learning how to use continuous glucose monitoring to help people with T2 diabetes not on insulin improve blood sugar control One method is to agree a test meal of steak and buttered greens, as below. They then compare that with say a bowl of porridge Result very fast learning!!
It's true all diets can work if they lead to consistently eating less which is what will reduce bodyfat.
That said in ad libitum free living studies low carb usually outperforms other approaches. Why?
Rule simplicity is one. Just stay away from bagels, bread, rice, pasta, potatoes and things with added sugar/flour.
These foods have calories. Often lots. Stay away from them and your life gets better. Simple.
Get your carbs low enough and visceral fat reduces rapidly too, sometimes even without huge weight loss. Visceral fat reduction for diabetes is more important than losing fat under the skin.
You can also keep your CGM time in range 90% even without massive weight loss too. Many of my patients achieve remission with only 5% weight loss. Why? Because they also reduce the foods that push their blood sugars up whilst simultaneously losing body fat.
So yes, weight loss is what's required for most to achieve diabetes remission.
Occasionally you come across patients who have no weight to loss but are diabetic with high blood sugars. Reducing carbs makes sense here too.
Ultimately low carb is a practically simple lifestyle friendly non-extreme method to achieve weight loss + reducing blood sugars in one go whilst still eating solid foods you enjoy.
You of course have other methods but they do get more extreme.
For example the NHS Path To Remission programs involves patients eating ZERO solid food for 3 months. They only drink ultra low fat protein shakes and protein bars for 3 months.
About 46% can achieve remission this way. Cool. But how cool would you feel NOT participating at all eating meals with your friends or family for 3 whole months?
That's tough.
But for some reason staying away from bread gets labeled as an extreme fad whilst actually extreme methods get labelled as "evidence based".
The prejudice against low carb is rife and it's hurting patients.
The more we accept there are many tools in our toolboxes we could be using the better.

"we found that a higher total cholesterol level was associated with a higher chance of becoming
centenarian, which stands in contrast to clinical guidelines regarding cholesterol levels [29] but is in line with previous studies showing that high cholesterol is generally favorable for mortality in very old age [30]."

Sneak peek: Thomas Seyfried (@tnseyfried ) speaking live at the PHC Conference 2025.
Today’s session was packed with insights that challenge the way we think about cancer treatment and prevention.
So excited to hear Thomas Seyfried at #PHC2025 in London this morning Talking about the origin of cancer Only in this way can we make progress on CANCER PREVENTION instead of just treatment @PHCukorg

Dear @DiabetesUK PLEASE don’t forget the best way to improve blood sugar is to avoid not just sugary foods but the starchy foods that digest down into sugar DRUGS ARE A SECOND LINE TREATMENT because they may have side effects @rcgp
"Our Entire War On Saturated Fat, Which Has Dominated The Healthcare Advice That We Get From Our Doctors, Has Been Wrong."

In Fact, The Higher Your Cholesterol, The Longer You Live.
There Is Zero Correlation That Saturated Fat & Cholesterol Cause Heart Disease.
Researchers have analyzed Ancel Keys data, using all 22 original countries, the "supposed' link between saturated fat & heart disease totally VANISHED.
Ancel Keys was a liar & a fraud.
Ancel Keys "7 countries study" that made it look like heart disease was associated with fat intake was deceptive & false. He started with 22 countries & just tossed out the ones that didn’t fit his hypothesis!
One of the most harmful things that has come from Keys’ studies was what the food industry/large health organizations did with this information & how they utilized it to sell more processed foods.
In 1961, Ancel Keys landed a position on the nutrition committee for the American Heart Association. That same year, the AHA advised Americans to replace the saturated fats in their diets with polyunsaturated fats.
This prompted Americans to start utilizing PUFAs found in highly processed hydrogenated oils (i.e. corn, canola, soybean, etc.) instead of animal fats such as tallow, butter & ghee.
Those guidelines, which were supposed to eradicate cardiovascular disease, only added fuel to the fire as chronic disease skyrocketed.
Keys also determined to test his hypothesis in the Minnesota Coronary Experiment which failed miserably & the results of the study were buried until 2016.
The MCE was a double blind controlled clinical trial in 6 Minnesota mental hospitals.
Replacing butter with corn oil lowered cholesterol as predicted, but it raised cardiovascular disease & death.
Ancel Keys knew in 1989 that he was not only not correct, he was also precisely wrong.
The National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute funded that study. It's worth speculating how much expensive bad advice they continued to give in the 27 years from the study's conclusion in 1989, until the exposition of the study's actual results by Chris Ramsden in 2016.
Industrialized toxic seed oils added onto a high sugar, processed carbohydrate, chemical filled diet has caused 93% of Americans to be metabolically unhealthy.
The dramatic rise of the rates of heart disease, cancer, diabetes & chronic autoimmune speak for themselves.

For #WorldDiabetesDay how about looking for common ground amongst those trying to help people with T2D?Prof Roy Taylor of DiRECT fame has been very supportive of my efforts for years now. Here is our joint statement
A systematic review has revealed that low carb diets led to greater reduction in HbA1c, superior weight loss, reductions in diabetes medication use & improved metabolic outcomes. So why isn't low carb freely prescribed? Good question...
