One year after the adoption of the first-ever @WHO resolution on kidney health, ISN joined key discussions at #WHA79 to help move from global commitment to practical implementation.
Two side events brought together policymakers, clinicians, and global health partners to explore how kidney health can be better integrated into universal health coverage (UHC), NCD strategies, and primary care systems. Discussions highlighted the importance of prevention, early detection, coordinated care models, and resilient health systems in improving outcomes for people living with kidney disease.
As ISN President @cellotonelli noted: “The focus is now on implementation, moving from the ‘why’ to the ‘how.’”
These conversations build momentum toward stronger, more equitable kidney care worldwide and support progress ahead of the 2027 UN High-Level Meeting on UHC.

On the sidelines of #WHA79, ISN was pleased to host a dinner bringing together key health leaders and partners for direct dialogue on advancing kidney health within global health agendas.
The discussion convened leaders from government, primary care, industry, and global health organizations, including representatives from @NHSEngland, WONCA, @VantiveHealth, @Novartis, and diplomatic partners.
Conversations focused on strengthening collaboration, advancing integrated care approaches, and translating global commitments into practical action for countries and communities.

The World Organization of Family Doctors (WONCA) plays an important role in strengthening primary health care (PHC) and advancing universal health coverage.
In my meeting with WONCA’s incoming President, Prof. Viviana Martinez-Bianchi, and President-Elect, Prof. Pilar Astier, I thanked the organization for its leadership in family medicine worldwide.
I emphasized that #PHC has a central place in the new European Programme of Work (#EPW2), where it will guide policies and actions across the European Region. We confirmed that we will keep working closely to strengthen PHC as the basis for better health in the Region.
I also welcomed @WoncaWorld leadership’s strong interest in my flagship initiative on violence against women & girls, and we agreed to working together on this critical issue.

At #WONCA2025 in Lisbon 🇵🇹, I stressed that primary health care (PHC) is the foundation to address our greatest challenges – from climate change and emergencies to healthy ageing and sexual & gender-based violence.
But #PHC is under strain: health workers are overstretched, posts remain unfilled, communities left waiting.
As a family doctor, I know these challenges. And I assured colleagues that they are not alone. Under the new European Programme of Work, we at @WHO_Europe will
🔹put PHC to at the centre of every national health policy & budget
🔹provide tailored country support & foster cross-country learning
🔹lead thinking on digital health, including AI
🔹amplify the voices of our health workers.
Because investing in PHC is investing in our future.
