Zack Polanski would doubtless have loved to win the Holborn by-election. He managed to triple the Greens' share of the vote, in a difficult seat for the party and in the midst of Labour's short Burnham honeymoon.
Yet the media reaction is as one: shouldn't Polanski resign? The question isn't a question at all. It's a prompt your brain is supposed to interpret as proof he's failed, he's damaging the party, he needs to be replaced.
It's intended to bypass the reality that Polanski has turned the party's fortunes around in terms of vote share and MPs, that the Greens are now a major insurgent force in UK politics, that he helped drive Starmer out of office and is driving Burnham further left than either Burnham or the Blairite Labour bureaucracy are inclined to go to win back the left.
The sanctions against Israel's illegal settlements happened because of the Polanski-led Greens, not because Labour suddenly saw the light – after three years of conspiring in a genocide.
The Green surge under Polanski is also driving the break-up of the cosy old two-party closed shop that has overseen the wrecking of Britain's industrial base and the economy's dependency on a financial sector whose only policy is ever-deepening austerity for you and me.
Those are the reasons the political and media class want Polanski gone. And they will keep trying to short-circuit your brain into thinking that that would be good for the country rather than just for them.
🚨BREAKING
@TheGreenParty calls for Thames Water and South East Water to be taken into public ownership WITHOUT COMPENSATION by Christmas
Thames Water is insolvent, and South East Water has repeatedly failed to supply water to thousands of homes
This is wonderful from the Greens
Zack Polanski, "Over the next year, more than 1/3 of the money that the DWP spend on housing benefits, go straight into the pockets of private landlords, subsidising their extortionate rents"
"That's £13.4 billion"
"That could be spent building new council homes, repairing our creaking housing stock, bringing homes lost through right to buy back into public hands"
"That's why we are calling on this government to put a three year emergency brake on private rents"
My view: Polanski’s point is that the housing-benefit bill is not just a welfare issue: it is increasingly a public subsidy for an unaffordable private-rental market.
When rents rise unchecked, tenants pay more, taxpayers pick up more of the bill, and landlords benefit from a system that treats secure housing as an investment vehicle. Meanwhile, councils lack the funding to build genuinely affordable homes or repair the homes they already own.
A three-year emergency rent freeze would give renters breathing room, slow the upward spiral and create time to build social housing at scale. It should sit alongside stronger tenant protections, an end to no-fault evictions, proper enforcement of housing standards and a major programme to bring empty and former council homes back into use.
Britain cannot solve a housing crisis by endlessly subsidising extortionate rents. We need affordable, secure homes—not ever-larger payments flowing upwards to private landlords.
Universal Credit doesn't know the cost of a pint of milk. Or heating. Or the bus.
It was never set based on how much essentials cost. Leaving millions without enough to live on and forced to turn to food banks.
✋But we have a chance to change that.
Ed Miliband said “I want to say to the millions of people in this country, who have been moved & outraged by the plight of the Palestinian people, we hear you. You were right.” Then deproscribe Palestine Action, release the prisoners & stop
arresting people for holding a placard.
Astonishing fact: the BBC has not broadcast an iv with Francesca Albanese since Dec '23.
Almost 3 yrs of genocide & they've not once felt the need to talk to the UN's Special Rapporteur for human rights in the occupied Palestinian territories. /1
In the ongoing genocide case against the Israeli apartheid regime in the International Court of Justice, South Africa has submitted a dossier to the ICJ on the regime’s blatant non-compliance with the Court’s Provisional Orders, and on its continuing acts of genocide in Palestine. South Africa understands that, for the sake of all of humanity, the impunity of the Israeli regime and its collaborators must end. And making that happen is a responsibility of all of us.

Judge ruled that terrorism-related sentencing provisions should not be applied to five Palestine activists prosecuted for criminal damage painting Barclays Bank red & breaking windows & who had not been charged with terrorism offences. This is major breakthrough for common sense
Universal Credit doesn't cover life's essentials. And millions of people are being forced to turn to a food bank as a result.
How much money people have to live on should reflect real costs, not party-political interests.
❗ It's time to take the politics out of Universal Credit.
Thames Water is really taking p*** now. They've handed £1 MILLION to its new finance chief while it continues ripping off consumers and pumping raw sewage into our rivers. 😡
What are you waiting for @andyburnham, we don't want more regulation just nationalise the water industry NOW.

To all the Supermarkets and big commercial stores that operate 'Self Check-outs'....
You are heading towards almost exclusively self-checkout now. Yesterday I went shopping at one such store and the lady checking receipts at the exit was stopping everyone.
I didn't choose to participate in that nonsense, I had already filled my trolly, emptied my trolly and scanned the items, refilled my trolly, and so I just skipped the exit line and left.
I heard her saying "Umm - Excuse me “ as I kept walking and raised the receipt above my head, leaving the store.
You can either trust me to do self-checkout, or you can put your cashiers back in place like it used to be.
• I'm not interested in proving that I did your job for you.
• If you want me to be a cashier with no training then that's your problem not mine.
• Keep employing young people and give them job opportunities.
YOU DON'T PAY ME TO SCAN MY OWN SHOPPING.
YOU DON’T GIVE ME STAFF DISCOUNT FOR WORKING FOR YOU.
Signed…

Andy Burnham has still not lifted Yvette Cooper's proscription which sees thousands of good people arrested as terrorists just for holding placards.
Please RT this until the Labour Govt which inflicted it (but incredibly still expects our votes) - lifts it.
Thank you.
Labour Government think they can distract you by tinkering around the edges.
But refuse a wealth tax, rent controls, water nationalisation, an end to genocide & an end to oil & gas.
They need to know the Green Party is growing & won't be distracted.

@thameswater recently told me that due to “fiscal constraints”, they can’t afford to fix all of the illegal outfalls on the River Roding by 2030 (already a more than fair deadline in the circumstances I feel).
This single one million pound payment to their finance chief would, alone, be enough to stop a billion litres of raw sewage a year entering the river in Ilford. Which other companies do we allow to commit serious crimes because they’ve taken money that should have been used to ensure their company complies with the law & given it to their execs instead? How long until the government says “no more” to these chancers & puts Thames Water out of its misery?

Well, well. Here's a copy of @thameswater's licence to operate as a water company issued by @Ofwat.
It's signed by Cathryn Ross as Chief Executive of Ofwat.
Would that be the Cathryn Ross that is now Director of Strategy and External Affairs at Thames Water?
Of course it would
