Object store is all you need.

We built multi-active high availability on top of @ApacheDataFusio Ballista, using object storage for cluster coordination.

@phillipleblanc walked through the details in the recent DataFusion Community Showcase:

- Object store is already where your data lives. Using it for coordination means one dependency handles both.

- Multiple schedulers run at once, and any of them can accept and complete a query.

- Each scheduler writes its heartbeat and job state to object storage. If one goes quiet, another picks up its in-flight jobs and runs them to completion.

- Conditional writes dictate that when two schedulers reach for the same orphaned job, exactly one wins. The job's version bumps, so a recovered scheduler steps aside on its own.

- Schedulers discover each other through a shared file that lists who's in the cluster and how to reach them.

- Executors pull work when they have capacity, so schedulers don't need to track executor load.

- All communication between nodes uses mTLS, so only authorized members participate in the cluster.

- All the state that matters lives in object storage, so the cluster can pick up from any point.

Lost my phone at the office and spent 30 minutes turning the place over. Find My was disabled by MDM.

Out of ideas, I asked Claude how I could find it. It suggested tracking the Bluetooth signal strength, then wrote me a meter in about a minute.

I walked around watching the number climb. Found it.
